It is rare that such a diverse group of front-line workers and national level decision makers are brought together. Graham’s research provided an opportunity for exciting discussion and knowledge exchange. Relevance of study findings was discussed and implications for practice, research, and leadership were examined. From these, recommendations were generated which will augment Graham’s thesis work and will serve as an impetus for future research and policy development pertinent to this vital sector of Canadian health human resources. Although public health nurses represent a proportionally small number of Canadian nurses, their work is vital to the sustainability of the public health enterprise and the future health of the Canadian population. Interest and participation in the PHN Think-Tank was demonstrative of participants’ commitment to support healthy work environments and passion for their professions.

Paulette Guitard received a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the Université de Montréal in 1985, a Masters of Education from the Université du Québec à Rimouski in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (Rehabilitation) from the Université de Montréal in 2003. The topic of her thesis was playfulness in adults. She has worked in adult mental health, paediatrics, and acute rehabilitation (adults and adolescents). She joined the faculty of the occupational therapy program in 1992, and served as program director from 1994 to 1997.

Shannon Bainbridge is an assistant professor in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences and an affiliate investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). She obtained her Ph.D. from Queen’s University (Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology) with a dissertation that focused on the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy. Professor Bainbridge went on to complete two post-doctoral fellowships, the first at Magee-Womens Research Institute (Pittsburgh, PA) and the second at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto, ON). In both fellowships her research examined how different biological and genetic influences affect early placental development in the context of both healthy and pathological pregnancies.

Candidates coming from non-thesis master’s degree programs (e.g., professional or course-based) must have research competence demonstrated either through activities completed during practice and/or as part of their program. These students will be required to present a dossier demonstrating research skills that may include research reports, publications in peer-reviewed journals, program development and evaluation reports, abstracts, presentations or the like. The proposed thesis supervisor will evaluate the dossier and submit a letter of evaluation to the admissions committee which will make the final decision about the student’s suitability for the program.
