After my degree in history and German studies, I obtained an assistant's post at the History Seminar. When that expired, I looked for a job which would enable me to finish my thesis while working. In 2000 I succeeded in finding a part-time post in the equal opportunities department of Basel University. There, I organized the first professional development courses for doctoral students (career planning, project management etc.), and helped set up the various local and national mentoring programmes. This job made it easier for me to progress within the university. I successfully applied for a post in the research vice-rectorate, as an academic assistant with responsibility for the humanities and social sciences. For example, I collaborated on the university's Strategy 2007, both in terms of content and operationally, and I assisted appointment committees and various institutional evaluations. Then came the latest step in my career development: the rectorate made me responsible for the development of doctoral education at Basel university. This means I now have responsibility for all the faculties, not just humanities and social sciences. I have been working in this area since about 2009. Basel University now has over 30 doctoral programmes, hosted in different faculties.
