Appiano in the Upper Etsch district boasts the perfect terroir for the classic Pinot varieties, especially for Pinot Blanc, although Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio also give a convincing demonstration of their full potential on the sunny plateau of Eppan Berg. Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and another South Tyrol variety, namely Schiava, flourish in the vineyards above St. Michael Dorf.

The monastery vineyards are all located within a radius of a few kilometres of the winery in and around Bolzano and the sun-blessed plateau of Eppan. The best sites at MURI-GRIES include the two vineyards located in the historical quarter of Gries-Moritzing (Bolzano) and the Klosteranger vineyard immediately adjoining the monastery. Lagrein has long been at home here and flourishes in the lingering gentle warmth of the quartz porphyry soils. As Lagrein is especially dear to our hearts and we are determined to respect its origins, we have developed the single-site principle guaranteeing targeted development of these special sites and the production of each vintage using grapes from one and the same site – from the vine to the glass.Details

Nel 1845, un gruppo di monaci benedettini proveniente da Muri, in Svizzera, giunse a Gries, alle porte di Bolzano, dove rilevò l’abbazia dei canonici agostiniani e con essa anche la loro attività vitivinicola già antica di secoli, dando vita ad una simbiosi fra convento, cantina e vigneti rimasta intatta fino ai giorni nostri. Oggi, nel 21° secolo, la cantina MURI-GRIES vanta prodotti d’eccellenza, come i vini della linea “Abtei Muri”, vinificati esclusivamente dalle uve dei vigneti più pregiati della tenuta dal 1989.

In 1845 the Benedictines moved from Muri in Switzerland to Gries in South Tyrol, where the order took over the Augustinian monastery. In so doing, they inherited a long tradition of wine-growing, which they nurtured in the spirit of a symbiosis of monastery, winery and estate that is still very much in evidence today. The result, in the 21st century, is a range of top-quality wines from MURI-GRIES like the Abtei Muri line, which has been produced from selected grapes from the very best sites since 1989.

We have a clear long-standing commitment to Lagrein as a native grape variety. It is a commitment to sustainable working with a variety that feels very much at home in our monastery vineyards and flourishes accordingly. Year after year, the vines deliver increasingly impressive results. That is something we also owe to old vines planted in the 1930s, which we use to select outstanding vine material in our constant endeavour to focus on the distinctive character of Lagrein: an elegant red wine with a strong identity, both highly complex and down-to-earth – and the hallmark of MURI-GRIES.

Wir haben eine klare Entscheidung für die autochthone Rebsorte Lagrein getroffen und halten seit langem an ihr fest. Es ist ein nachhaltiges Arbeiten mit einer Traube, die sich in unseren klösterlichen Weinbergen wohlfühlt, hier zuhause ist und hervorragend gedeiht. Jahr für Jahr schenkt sie uns ausdruckvollere Ergebnisse. Diese verdanken wir auch unseren alten Rebbeständen aus den 30er Jahren, aus denen wir erlesenes Rebmaterial züchten und so beständig daran arbeiten, ihren unverwechselbaren Charakter herauszuarbeiten: für einen eleganter Rotwein mit Identität, wunderbar komplex und bodenständig.
