In order to better target the skills to be worked on, each apprentice is now monitored throughout their studies. ‘The young people are really aware that during their studies, their skills are being closely monitored’, says Fabienne Turpin, a teaching assistant at the CFA.

With the New Year, the employment service (ASH) in the German town of Alzey in the State of Rhineland-Pfalz launched a new project to help young people prepare for the world of work. ‘Fit for a Job’ is a pre-vocational training programme for young adults and teenagers who have few qualifications or ambitions. ASH experts work with participants to identify their aspirations, the skills they will need, and the opportunities on offer. Then, workshop modules – in areas like carpentry, metal-working and office administration – show them what the profession is like and give them the opportunity to try it out. As a result, they can make more informed choices and move on to a job or apprenticeship.

After ten months of training, an ESF co-funded apprenticeship project in Rescue Service South (Rsyd) and Landskrona emergency services came to an end, and 22 apprentices – 10 of them women – received their fire-fighting diplomas. The project’s target group was unemployed young people between 18 and 24 years old and with a multicultural background. Those with disabilities could also take part. The two emergency services have been criticised for arranging their own firefighter training when there is a national qualification, but Ms Gunilla Jansson, development manager of Rsyd, thinks that they had little choice. “Our mission is to prevent and reduce risks for citizens. For us to be successful we need to have more points of contact with the community. Then it is a great advantage that our employees' backgrounds reflect the society we serve. Today, there are not enough firefighters with a multicultural background, or female firefighters, so we organised this training ourselves, she explained.

After ten months of training, an ESF co-funded apprenticeship project in Rescue Service South (Rsyd) and Landskrona emergency services came to an end, and 22 apprentices – 10 of them women – received their fire-fighting diplomas.
