The Superintending Engineer of the system, Mr. L. W. Clark, is quoted as having said that the increase 'since May 13th when the canal officially opened to traffic' is well over 1,000. The fact is, of course, that the whole Rideau system ws thrown out of gear by the failure of those responsible in the Department of Transport to see that the work on Newboro and Beveridges locks was completed by the official opening date, May 13th.

As Fort Walsh grew in importance it also grew in size. New barracks and stables were constructed; more shops and facilities were added. A library was constructed in 1881, and there was even a grass tennis court in front of the fort. The mounties played cricket and baseball, raced horses, and had soccer matches which might have dozens of players per side. Métis, Natives, freighters, cowboys, and townspeople were often to be seen engaging in sports with the mounties.

Although November is not the time of year for numbers of birds, it is, however, a time when many rarities should be looked for. Birds which have appeared in November at Pelee include northern gannet, harlequin duck, purple sandpiper, red phalarope, black-legged kittiwake, ash-throated flycatcher, American white pelican, townsend's solitaire, western tanager and mountain bluebird.

Upon his return to Toronto, he produced more than one hundred oil paintings from his sketches including those requested by George Simpson of the HBC. In 1851, Kane applied to the Canadian government for funds to paint his sketches based on the national importance of capturing Aboriginal lifestyle. He was granted £500 for 12 paintings to be displayed in the Library of Parliament. These successes enabled him to live on the salary of a landscape painter, which was until then unheard of.
