Enjoy a performance of the 19th-century military drills by the Signal Hill Tattoo (in season), or take a hike from the summit along the coast and harbour entrance.

The hill gets its name from a hangman's platform (a gibbet) used in the St. John's colonial period to deter criminal activity. This trail, which starts out along the first portion of the Lac Solitaire and the Bouchard Creek trails, leads to the spectacular lookout at Lac Solitaire. It then descends to the south end of Lac aux Chevaux, offering a range of views overlooking Benoît Lake, Lac du Pimbina and Bouchard Creek, and finally returns to the Rivière à la Pêche Service Centre.

This trail passes through dense coastal forest, beside bogs rich with orchids, over coastal barrens, and then to the sandy beach and rocky islands at Harbour Rocks. Along the trail, a viewing platform provides a spectacular view of St. Catherines River Beach. In the thick growth of shrubs at the trail’s edge you may see birds such as the common yellow-throat, savannah sparrow, and palm warbler feeding on insects or berries. At the shore, a viewing scope provides a close-up look at offshore seals and seabirds like gannets and eiders.
