The government strongly condemns the continuing escalation of violence. The complaints made by the International Red Cross about the lack of treatment for the injured shows that the situation on the ground is entirely at odds with international humanitarian law and requires an immediate independent investigation. The government condemns these violations of the law applicable in armed conflicts. For the first time in 60 years the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has had to cease its activities. This UN agency was compelled to acknowledge that its security could no longer be guaranteed by the Israeli forces. The government is therefore making an urgent plea for an immediate ceasefire. The continuing spiral of violence runs counter to the interests of all the stakeholders and is incompatible with the basic principle of international law.
