Onze medewerkers maken ook dagelijks nieuwe voorspellingen over de evolutie van de olie die uit de brandstoftanks lekt. Zo kunnen we de kustgemeenten waarschuwen indien olie hun richting uit komt. Tot en met vandaag zijn er nog geen olieresten op Belgische stranden aangespoeld.

On Tuesday morning the 6th of October 2015, the gas tanker Al Oraiq and the carrier Flinterstar collided in Belgian waters. Since that day, the scientific service Management Unit of the Mathematical Model of the North Sea (MUMM) of our Institute works day and night to evaluate the situation. Our aircraft flies several times a day (normally it flies several times a week) over the place of the incident. Our collaborators make daily predictions of the evolution of the oil spilled from the wreck. In this way we can warn the coastal communities if there is a danger of oil on the beach. Until today, no oil has been found on the Belgian beaches.

Le mardi matin 6 octobre 2015, vers 4h10, le pétrolier de gaz Al Oraiq est entré en collision avec le cargo Flinterstar devant la côte belge. Depuis ce jour, le service scientifique de l’Unité de Gestion du Modèle Mathématique de la mer du Nord (UGMM) travaille nuit et jour pour évaluer au mieux la situation en mer. L’avion de surveillance vole plusieurs fois par jour (au lieu de plusieurs fois par semaine en situation normale). Nos collaborateurs ont développé un modèle capable de prédire journalièrement la trajectoire des hydrocarbures qui s’échappent du Flinterstar. Avec ces informations, nous pouvons prévenir les communes côtières du risque d’échouage sur leurs plages. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, les hydrocarbures n’ont pas encore atteint les plages belges.
