“Mae’r artistiaid rhyfeddol hyn yn bwrw eu persbectifau unigryw eu hunain ar waith sy’n ymchwilio i beth yw ystyr bod yn ddynol yn y gymdeithas gyfoes. Boed yn fewnblyg ac yn hynod bersonol neu’n ymgysylltiedig â materion cymdeithasol a diwylliannol eraill, mae pob artist yn dangos pwysigrwydd celf a diwylliant yn ein bywydau beunyddiol, gan herio ein rhagdybiaethau ac yn agor ffyrdd newydd o ymgysylltu â’r byd o’n cwmpas
These amazing artists bring their own unique perspectives to work that explores what it means to be human in contemporary society. Whether introspective and deeply personal or engaged with broader social and cultural issues, each artist demonstrates the importance of art and culture in our everyday lives, challenging our preconceptions and opening up new ways of engaging with the world around us.

Mae gwaith John Akomfrah yn aml yn edrych ar bobloedd alltud ar draws y byd, hanes, y cof, gwladychiaeth a’i chynhysgaeth drwy gyfryngau seiliedig ar y lens. Mae’r ystod o ffilmiau sgrin unigol a lluosog yn gadael i ni ailystyried y ffyrdd yr ydym yn meddwl am hanesion personol ac ar y cyd, naratifau mawr ein hoes, ar draws cenedl-wladwriaethau a chyfandiroedd.
John Akomfrah’s work often explores the global diaspora, history, memory, colonialism and its legacy through lens-based media. The range of single and multiscreen films allows us to reconsider the ways in which we think about both personal and collective histories, the grand narratives of our times, across nation states and continents. His work has often given voice to underrepresented communities and their universal stories told through the creation of sublime imagery, and evocative and immersive soundtracks.

Mae’r prosiect wedi sefydlu ei bencadlys mewn hen ysgol fabanod yn y gymuned a ailagorwyd i’r cyhoedd gan y prosiect y llynedd. Wedi’i hysgogi gan waith cymdeithasol ymgysylltiedig yr artist Owen Griffiths, mae’r ysgol bellach yn cynnal sesiynau wythnosol gydag artistiaid, cydweithwyr ac athrawon.
The project has set up base in a disused infants’ school in the community, which was re-opened to the public by the project last year. Driven by the socially engaged practice of the artist Owen Griffiths, the school now runs weekly sessions with artists, collaborators and teachers. Described as a space for social learning, the school’s curriculum and activities explore making, skill sharing, art production, food and meals. It promotes engagement around land, play, ownership and collaboration, whilst establishing a long-term relationship with the community. This is creating a genuine collaboration (between community, artists and partners) and authoring sustainable opportunities for change.

Bwriad y diwrnod yw rhoi mynediad ehangach i’r syniadau a’r themâu sy’n rhedeg drwy waith pob artist ond hefyd ystyried y cyflwyniadau hyn fel catalydd ar gyfer trafodaeth am gymdeithas, diwylliant a defnyddioldeb celf.
The day aims to give a broader access to the ideas and themes that run through each artists’ practice but also to consider these presentations as a catalyst for conversation on society, culture and the usefulness of art. Bringing together disparate voices from different cultures from all over the world we invite you to listen and join this conversation.

Yn ei waith diweddar, Cosmic Orphans (2006), gosodiad penodol ar gyfer safle teml Sri Krishnan a grewyd ar gyfer Biennale Singapore, gorchuddiodd Harsha y nenfwd cyfan uwchben y sanctwm mewnol a’r llawr o amgylch twr y teml gyda muriau o ffigyrau’n cysgu.
(2006) a site-specific painting installation at the Sri Krishnan Temple created for the Singapore Biennale, Harsha covered the entire surface of the rooftop above the inner sanctum and the floor surrounding the temple’s tower with paintings of sleeping figures. Painted directly onto the floor using flat colours, the figures occupy a space not normally associated with traditional painting – their displacement provoking the audience to consider what is permitted and forbidden in relation to where they tread in the temple.

Mae’n arbrofi gyda’r prosesau hyn ac yn chwarae gyda nhw, gan fanteisio ar yr alcemi sy’n gynhenid i ffotograffiaeth gemegol neu newid yr elfennau amseru sy’n peri mai cyfrwng y symudol yw ffilm. Ceir synnwyr o eironi y tu ôl i’w waith – bod artist o Daiwan yn dwli ar ddulliau mor draddodiadol o greu delweddau.
He experiments with and manipulates these processes, exploiting the alchemy inherent in chemical photography or changing the elements of timing which makes film the medium of movement. There is a sense of irony behind his work – that a Taiwanese artist should be preoccupied by such traditional methods of creating images. Living in a highly sophisticated technological world, Wu Chi-Tsung takes delight in almost accidentally finding ways to capture or re-imagine the world around him. All his works, whether presented as still or moving images, use time as an integral part of their make-up, not simply through the convention of a shutter opening and closing but through the subversion of time in how the images were made.

Grŵp o ymarferwyr celf a ffermio yw Futurefarmers a sefydlwyd ym 1995 gan yr artist Amy Franceschini sydd â’i chartref yng Nghaliffornia. Llinell gyson drwy waith Franceschini yw cwestiynu estynedig am sut mae ‘natur’ a ‘diwylliant’ yn cael eu gweld.
Futurefarmers is a group of art and farming practitioners founded in 1995 by California-based artist Amy Franceschini.  A consistent line through Franceschini’s work reveals sustained questioning about how “nature” and “culture” are perceived. She uses various modes to uncover histories and currents related to this divide by challenging systems of exchange and tools used to “hunt” and “gather.” Her work manifests as temporary public art, museum exhibitions, publications, bus tours, public programs and most recently permanent public art.  Her work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Whitney Biennial in New York, New York Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Venice Architectural Biennale and she is the recipient of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2006 Eureka Fellowship.

Yn ôl Oliver Basciano, Cadeirydd Beirniaid Artes Mundi 7, “Rydym yn gyffro i gyd wrth ddyfarnu gwobr Artes Mundi 7 i John Akomfrah mewn cydnabyddiaeth o’i gyfraniad anhygoel i gelfyddyd dros yr wyth mlynedd diwethaf. Rydym yn gwneud hynny mewn cydnabyddiaeth o’i waith sydd wedi’i gyflwyno’n ddiweddar Auto Da Fé (2016) yn ogystal ag mewn gwerthfawrogiad o allu’r artist i adrodd straeon gyda dyfnder hanesyddol, gan edrych ar faterion cymdeithasol a gwleidyddol drwy iaith sinematig gywrain mewn ffilmiau megis Peripteia (2012), Unfinished Conversation (2013), Vertigo Sea (2015). Dros ei yrfa hir, mae gwaith Akomfrah yn tanlinellu sut mae gan gelfyddyd y gallu unigryw i siapio a myfyrio ar y cyflwr dynol, gan gyd-fynd ag egwyddorion sylfaenol Artes Mundi.”
Oliver Basciano, Artes Mundi 7 Judging Chair has said, “We are excited to award John Akomfrah the Artes Mundi7 prize in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to art over the past eight years. We do so in recognition of both his newly-presented work Auto Da Fé (2016) and in appreciation of the artist’s ability to tell stories with historical depth, exploring social and political concerns through exquisite cinematic language in films such as Peripteia (2012), Unfinished Conversation (2013), Vertigo Sea (2015). Over his long career, Akomfrah’s practice underlines how art has the unique ability to reflect on and shape the human condition, in alignment with fundamental principles of Artes Mundi.”

Symudais i oriel Renzo Martens â’i hoglau siocled a oedd, fel ei waith yn Chapter, yn trafod Cyfalafiaeth, tlodi, adnoddau a chelf yn Affrica. Yn fwriadol amwys a chyfwynebiadol, doeddwn i ddim yn siŵr a oedd Renzo wrthi’n ddiddig yn cydweithio â Chyfalafiaeth, neu a oedd yn ffafrio ei diddymu a pham roedd o mor fodlon stumio’r cyfryngau ac yntau’n tynnu sylw at gamddefnydd o’r un peth.
I moved into the Renzo Martens chocolate scented gallery, which as his work at Chapter, discussed Capitalism, poverty, resources and art in Africa. Deliberately ambiguous and confrontational I wasn’t sure whether Renzo was happily working with Capitalism, or favoured its destruction and why he was gladly using media manipulation whilst he drew attention to this misuse of the same thing. His use of Congo materials, artists and faces (on sale and well priced at £39.99) transformed the smell and sight of this Welsh gallery.

Yn ôl Karen Mackinnon, Cyfarwyddwr Artes Mundi, “Pleser o’r mwyaf i ni yw cyhoeddi John Akomfrah fel enillydd seithfed wobr eilflwydd Artes Mundi. Mae Artes Mundi’n hyrwyddo artistiaid cyfoes blaenllaw o bob cwr o’r byd y mae eu gwaith yn gysylltiedig â phob agwedd ar ein bywydau personol mewn cymdeithas fyd-eang. Mae ffocws Artes Mundi ar y cyflwr dynol yn canu cloch unigryw yn yr amserau ansicr hyn. Rydym am ddiolch i’n panel beirniaid am eu sensitifrwydd a’u trylwyredd deallusol wrth ddethol yr enillydd. Teimlai’r beirniaid fod yr holl artistiaid ar y rhestr fer wedi arddangos gwaith eithriadol. Fodd bynnag, nid yn unig am y gwaith yn yr arddangosfa y rhoddir y wobr ond am ragoriaeth barhaus eu gwaith dros yr 8 mlynedd diwethaf. Rhoddwyd Gwobr Artes Mundi 7 am gyflwyniad Akomfrah o Auto da Fé ac am gorff sylweddol o waith eithriadol yn ymdrin â materion ymfudo, hiliaeth ac erledigaeth grefyddol. Mae sôn am y pethau hyn ar yr ennyd arbennig hon yn teimlo’n bwysicach nag erioed.”
Karen Mackinnon, Artes Mundi Director has said, “We are delighted to announce John Akomfrah as the winner of the seventh biennial Artes Mundi Prize.  Artes Mundi champions leading contemporary artists, from across the world, whose work relates to every aspect of our personal lives in a global society. Artes Mundi’s focus on the human condition finds a unique resonance in these uncertain times. We want to thank our panel of judges for their sensitivity, thoroughness and intellectual rigour in selecting the winner.  The judges felt that all the shortlisted artists showed outstanding work.  However the prize is awarded not just for the work in the exhibition but for the continued excellence of their practice over the past 8 years. The Artes Mundi 7 Prize was awarded for Akomfrah’s presentation of Auto Da Fé and for a substantial body of outstanding work dealing with issues of migration, racism and religious persecution. To speak of these things in this particular moment feels more important than ever.”

I mewn i’r orielau cyfoes, ac fe’m cyfarchwyd gan gasgliad o waith gan Theaster Gates sydd wedi’i ysbrydoli gan systemau credoau, gan gynnwys rhan o do eglwys, Boli Affricanaidd, gafr ddefodol saer rhydd a ffilm yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth Gospel.
Into the contemporary galleries and I was greeted by Theaster Gates belief-system inspired collection of works, including a section of a church roof, an African Boli, a freemasons ritual goat and a film featuring Gospel music. As a Christian I was moved by the mood of the film but wished the noise from the mechanised goat on a rail track, hadn’t drowned it out.
