Public sector spending cuts could mean the end of healthy school meals in the UK. Writing in the Western Mail, Prof. Kevin Morgan of Cardiff University says that school food is the test of a society's commitment to social justice, public health and sustainable development. In recent years, there has been a push towards higher nutritional standards and sustainable procurement, led by government schemes such as Appetite for Life in Wales, and projects like the English Food for Life partnership. These gains are now under threat from spending cuts, which could leave the school meal service reduced to its statutory minimum a provider of free school meals for families on low incomes.
