Welsh organic farmers have requested that OCW organise a study tour of a number of progressive organic Scottish beef and sheep farms that have been working with the SAC sheep specialist John Vipond. These farmers have been able to increase their flock size through selecting for easy care traits and have improved their stocking rates by improving forage management. The proposed tour schedule is: leaving Wales on Tuesday 12th October and returning on Friday the 15th. The four farm visits will be facilitated by John Vipond and a visit to the organic unit of Newcastle University is planned for the return journey.

Sunflowers are usually grown for their oil, and the meal left behind has been long been part of poultry diets. But what if we were to grow them primarily as a high protein and energy feed? This report and summary booklet, prepared by the Organic Research Centre, makes the nutritional case for doing so. On-farm trials at Capestone Organic Poultry in Pembrokeshire showed they are extremely high in energy but protein levels are disappointing. In combination other complementary home grown ingredients such as dehulled beans, it is possible grow significantly more of our feed in Wales than is currently the case.
