These are the most detailed maps of their period and they cover more than 95% of Wales. The index documents for each map list the payable tithes, the names of the landowners and land occupiers, the land use, and in most cases (75%) the field names.

There are generally three copies of all tithe maps. One was provided for the Tithe Commissioners, which now live at the The National Archives. A local copy originally produced for the local church is now often held by local archives. A copy was also made for the diocesian registry and that is the copy which is now at the National Library of Wales. This is the copy which is generally used for this project where possible.

As tithe maps are very large, often 2m by 3m or more, there is no scanner available which can do the work. We have had to develop a special technique for digitisation which involves hanging the map on a curved wall and taking a number of photographs of every part of the map. These photographs are then digitally stitching them together to make one large map. Some of these files are more than 1GB

Who was first to finish? Well in Anglesey there was an excellent team of volunteers in the local Record Office who worked regularly on their material. After they finished transcribing they were registered as reviewers and they completed that work as well. Close behind them was another excellent team of volunteers in Flintshire Record Office, who also completed their county a while ago, but have some reviewing to do. Volunteers are also free of course to help out in other counties, for which we are very grateful.

The National Library therefore had to think of a creative solution to digitise the tithe maps, as their biggest scanners weren’t large enough to digitise over 60% of the maps. The solution was to create a custom set-up using a curved magnetic wall and a digital camera. The map held in place on the curved wall using strong magnets, and is digitised in parts by using the digital camera. The images are then reconstructed into a complete map using editing software.

In 1830 the population of Llanelli and district numbered some 17,000. By 1900 it had grown to 36,000 and today totals some 40,000. Llanelli’s growth derived predominantly from the presence of tinplate works and allied industries. The one hundred year dominance of metal production in the town began to gain momentum from the mid nineteenth century with the construction of the Dafen and then the Morfa tinplate works. By 1880 the town had seven tinplate works, earning it the name ‘Tinopolis’.

However, there are some areas which don’t have tithe at all, and where there is no map either, but as you see above, these are relatively small areas. One is Bodewryd in the north of the island, where Lord Stanley arranged to pay tithe to himself, and avoided the need for a tithe map. There were also no tithes payable in Llannerch y Medd.

There is some overlapping and gaps between the maps, and in most cases it’s possible to tidy this up by clipping or georeferencing, accurate goereferencing points near the boundaries of these maps would help.

There are around 1,200 tithe maps to digitise as part of the Cynefin project. Digitising the maps has posed a considerable challenge as they can be very large. Some of the tithe maps are 2m x 3m or even larger in some cases.
