The project follows a “hub and spoke” approach, combining site-specific investments with a central interpretation platform. Site-specific improvements have been made at Llechwedd, The Quarry Hospital and Padarn Lake Railway in Llanberis, Taith y Llechen between Tregarth and Bangor, Lon Las Ogwen and Lon Eifion and North Wales Pilgrims Way which links St Winefride’s Well in Flintshire to Bardsey on the Llŷn Peninsula, Llandudno Museum, Great Orme Bronze Age Mines and Great Orme Country Park. Segontium Roman Fort – Considered to be the longest occupied Roman Fort in Wales, this site was in use for over 300 years.  Designed to hold 1,000 Roman soldiers, it protected Rome’s access to Anglesey’s rich agricultural and mineral wealth. The Heritage Tourism Project has contributed to the redevelopment of the visitor centre which now brings the history of the site to life through exciting graphics, a handling collection, a site guide, events and children’s activities. Visitors can follow the story of the Romans in Wales at this site.

The immediate context of this study is the ongoing regeneration work that the Vale of Glamorgan Council and its partners are carrying out in Barry. This has generated enhancements to the historic eastern promenade and, at the time of writing, major redevelopment of the quays at Dock No. 1 is underway. However, it has broader intentions. Recognition of the significance of the landscape and townscape features that contribute to a distinctive sense of place and an associated feeling of community may influence the way Barry Island is looked after, enhanced and developed, now and in the future, in a sustainable manner. The report could inform dialogue about what is significant in the historic environment of the island, as further initiatives and opportunities arise — whether at the seaside or in residential areas.

Hubs have been set up at Holyhead, Amlwch, Beaumaris, Oriel Ynys Mon and in the South West (Aberffraw / Newburough Forest and Llys Llewelyn).  Conservation and interpretation work has also taken place at Llanddwyn Island, the Welsh equivelant of the patron saint of St Valentines – St Dwynwen. From exploring the history of copper in Wales, to discovering more about the patron saint of lovers, this project has helped to transform Angelsey into a heritage destination for all the family.
