Together with the computer vision and pattern recognition group, we are looking at technologies with which the computer is itself able to recognise exactly what is what in an image. Dr Sonneveld feels that “body language” is a useful umbrella term for this topic. She takes the view that tactile perceptions in the interaction between person and product can be seen as the body language of two social entities. This provides an opportunity to explore tactile aesthetics as if it were interpersonal behaviour. In future, designers can use this as a basis for their approach to design. What, in their view, should the object express?

De tactiele ervaring, het aanraken, is een veronachtzaamd onderwerp in ontwerpopleidingen en ontwerponderzoek. De Delftse promovenda Marieke Sonneveld heeft geprobeerd daar met haar proefschrift enige verandering in te brengen. ‘De tactiele ervaring, de tastzin, is een blinde vlek. Ze wordt overschaduwd door de visuele cultuur waarin we leven’.

De vraag is: wie besluit waarover en op grond waarvan? Welke taken en verantwoordelijkheden leggen we bij welke overheden (internationaal, nationaal, regionaal, lokaal?) en waarom, hoe zorgen we voor voldoende afstemming, welke verantwoordelijkheden kunnen of moeten privaat zijn? Deze vragen zijn in deze tijd helemaal actueel, nu we moeten nadenken over de rol die een Deltaregisseur (advies Deltacommissie 2008) kan spelen. Met haar civieltechnische achtergrond en de expertise in bestuurlijke vragenstukken rondom techniek, is de TU Delft bij uitstek een partner die kan meedenken over dit soort vragen.
