He announced here his intention of donating his private collection to serve as the foundation of a museum, where it can be made permanently available to the general public. The head of the municipal art collections, Dr. Manfred Fath, and the mayor of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Dr. Werner Ludwig, subsequently contacted Wilhelm Hack, who decided to donate the collection to the then still young industrial city.

After six successful editions of the Fotofestival in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg, the great upheavals of contemporary pictorial culture are at the focus of the First Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie, which is being shown under the title Farewell Photography. Since its invention, photography has been in a state of permanent metamorphosis. The past 25 years, however, seem to be characterised more than ever before by a moment of acceleration and the juxtaposition of a wide range of visual cultures. We have been living for many years in the age of networked images in which algorithms and programmes greatly impact appearance, places and dissemination of photographs and the relationship between photographer and the photographed, the viewer and society is being renegotiated. Encompassing seven thematic fields, the Biennale examines material and constitution, forms of use and appearance as well photography’s popular and societal potential. A chapter of the exhibition in the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum questions the material and ideal refractions that are at stake with the shift from analogue to digital media. As a counterpart, the second chapter addresses the opening and expansion of photographic practices, of pictorial space, formats and their accompanying altered forms of reading.

The artist collective Peles Empire was founded at the Städel School in Frankfurt by Katharina Stöver and Barbara Wolff in 2005. The eponymous Peles Castle in Rumania’s Carpathian Mountains, a summer residence completed in the late 19th century for King Carol I, is characterised by pompous architecture and decorations in the style of diverse historical epochs. The castle forms the starting point and artistic material for the works of the Berlin-based artists. The exhibition project 'not flat' in the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum’s Rudolf Scharpf Galerie is devoted to the long-term development of their work. Through constant reproduction, the sculptural works of the ‘Peles Empire’ increasingly diverge from the original. Each new work was founded on the idea on a renewed level of repetitions and the back reference to the original pictorial material. In the meanwhile, this sometime also contains the reproduction of their own works that were exhibited at an earlier point in time. This method infinitely heightens the distortion that was still comprehensible at the outset. The currently produce works that distance themselves from the pictorial jargon of the castle while back referencing it at the same time, relating its own very personal story of the original.

From April 2008 to February 2009, the museum underwent a sustainable energetic renovation. Corresponding reconstruction work was carried out, for example the installation of new photovoltaic equipment, state-of-the-art air-conditioning technology and a new lighting system. The city of Ludwigshafen has been a partner of the EU’s GreenBuilding programme with the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum since September 2009.

A central pillar of the holdings involves the donation made by the Cologne collector Wilhelm Hack in 1973. His collection comprises parts of the prehistoric grave finds from Gondorf on the Moselle River, medieval works in addition to a first-class selection of 20th-century artworks. This latter section of the collection featuring paintings by Kazimir Malevich, Lyubov Popova, Robert Delaunay, August Macke, Piet Mondrian and Max Bill traces the development of geometrical abstract art.

“(…) The idea of setting off a cultural initial spark in a city like this one greatly appealed to me,” said the donor in conjunction with the contract signing. The artist Rudolf Scharpf (1919 – 2014) made a gift of his complete artistic estate to the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in his native town of Ludwigshafen after having already donated a house, the present-day Rudolf-Scharpf-Galerie, in the city’s tradition-rich Hemshof district. While Rudolf Scharpf is primarily known for his virtuoso woodcuts, his artistic oeuvre is not restricted to printmaking but is also characterised by his dealings with a wide variety of techniques. Regular exhibitions taking place in the Rudolf-Scharpf-Galerie explore his artistic legacy, calling attention to his work dealing with different thematic aspects in diverse techniques. The current exhibition is the first dedicated to Rudolf Scharpf’s drawings.

In 1988, the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum was presented a donation encompassing over 2,500 artworks and documents from the collection of the Düsseldorf attorney Heinz Beck. Assembled in the 1960s and 1970s, Beck concentrated on collecting Pop Art in the broadest sense of the term. This comprises all artworks that deal with aspects of everyday life, including Nouveau Réalisme, the Fluxus movement and Critical Realism along with American and British Pop Art. He placed special attention on editions and also opened up his collection to objects that extend beyond the boundaries of traditional art genres to include postcards, exhibition posters, artists’ books and gramophone records. Ignoring conventional art historical categories, the wide spectrum of Heinz Beck’s collection makes it an historical document of politicizing and popularizing tendencies of the art of his time. The holdings have been completely inventoried and thematically examined in conjunction with the research project. The results were presented in the 2013 exhibition ‘Gut aufgelegt. Die Sammlung Heinz Beck’. Comprehensive information on the collection can be found in the accompanying exhibition as well as the complete catalogue of the collection’s holdings ‘Die Sammlung Heinz Beck’, which was also published in 2013.
