The palace was built between 1300 and 1400 by the Contarini "di San Paternian" aristocratic family, who at the end of the XV century decided to build a tower with a snail ("Bovolo" in Venetian language) staircase. From that moment on both the Contarini palace and family were given the nickname "del Bovolo" to underline this unusual building for Venice. Today the palace is owned by a Charity Institution and the Scala Contarini del Bovolo has surely become one of the most famous, visited and photographed snail staircases in the world.
