At the time, the Greenland colony had a population of 500 people or fewer. Even with some Icelandic crew, the cost of operating the Vinland enterprise was just not sustainable for the returns. In a short time, the base at L’Anse aux Meadows was abandoned and the buildings burnt. The Vikings may have continued their journeys to North America for centuries, perhaps involving trade with peoples of the Arctic, until the Greenland colony was itself abandoned in the 15th century.

La péninsule Great Northern, à Terre-Neuve, est fréquentée depuis longtemps par les Européens, à commencer par les Vikings qui ont brièvement occupé L'Anse aux Meadows il y a environ 1000 ans. Plus tard, au XVe siècle et XVIe siècle, les Basques sont venus pêcher le long de la côte ouest de Terre-Neuve où ils ont baptisé bien des sites, dont Port au Choix.

The Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula has a long history of European contact, beginning with the Viking who briefly occupied L'Anse aux Meadows about 1000 years ago. Later, during the late 1500s' and the 1600's the Basque fished along Newfoundland's west coast and named many of the places, including Port au Choix. During these years the French and English fought for control of the island. The English finally succeeded in 1713.
