One of the problems with this whole question is that the quality of the data is only really strong in recent history. In Newfoundland and around the gulf, in all of the fisheries—well, between Quebec and the gulf and Newfoundland fisheries, which are probably the best documented of what we have—all we have really are landings of commercial catches, and they go back to approximately the mid-1500s. Those have been reconstructed. And yes, you're quite right, there are periods of high productivity in the ocean; there are periods of low productivity. A lot of these probably relate to fluctuations in the whole ocean climate of the north Atlantic, and this is fairly well understood and accepted. But what we've seen or what we've witnessed recently is a decline to levels that have never been witnessed before.

There is a tradition of poet laureates in the world, particularly in the Commonwealth and Scandinavian countries. The first poet laureate was appointed in the 15th century in Scandinavia, I believe, and the first poet laureate of the British Parliament was appointed in the middle of the 16th century. William Wordsworth was a poet laureate, just to give you an example, and Lord Tennyson. The United States has had a poet laureate since the mid-thirties, poet laureate of the Library of Congress.

Les origines du mouvement unitarien, pour ceux d'entre vous qui ne le connaissent peut-être pas très bien, remontent à la réforme protestante du XVIe siècle, et celles du mouvement universaliste au XVIIIe siècle en Europe. On retrouve des unitariens universalistes dans différentes parties du monde, et l'association nord-américaine, appelée Association unitarienne universaliste, compte plus de 1 000 Églises et plus de 200 000 membres. Le Conseil unitarien du Canada réunit au-delà de 5 200 membres dans nos assemblées au Canada, et l'Église de Montréal regroupe plus de 200 fidèles.

Unitarianism, for those of you who may not know much about it, dates back to the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, and Universalism to the 18th century in Europe. Unitarians and Universalists exist in different parts of our world, and the North American association called the Unitarian Universalist Association has over 1,000 churches and over 200,000 members. The Canadian Unitarian Council represents over 5,200 members in our congregations in Canada, and the church in Montreal has a membership of over 200.

Lorsqu'est arrivée la vague de colons suivante, le mode de vie des Autochtones a changé. Alors qu'ils étaient des nomades vivant en petits groupes isolés, ils se sont regroupés en vastes communautés et ont adopté un mode de vie sédentaire.

Contact with European merchants and traders in Canada occurred in sequence, beginning with the Atlantic provinces in the 16th century, Ontario and Quebec in the 17th century, the Pacific provinces in the 18th century, the prairies in the 19th century, and the territories in the 20th century. Contact in the territories began in the west in Yukon, and to the east, which is now Nunavut. The subsequent wave of settlement that followed this changed the way that aboriginal populations lived, from small, isolated, mobile groups to large groups living in settlements and stationary.
