Pamplona Citadel, a remarkable example of those fostered by Philip II in the second half of the 16th Century, is one of the oldest and best preserved pentagonal bastioned fortresses in the world. To understand the importance of Pamplona in its day, we must take a quick look at the rare examples of similar citadels still standing in the world and at other fortifications, near and far. Although not all are included, we do show the most representative among them. It’s easy to find traces of the past all over Navarre. Villages, boroughs and cities, old fortified towns where we can still see remains of the towers and walls that served to protect them. Walls that even today tell ancient tales, taking us back to times in most cases dating from the medieval period.

Iruñeko Ziudadela, Felipe II.ak XVI. mendearen bigarren erdian sustatu zituenetan eredugarri, munduan den bastioidun gotorleku pentagonal zaharrenetakoa da, eta hoberen kontserbatuenetakoa. Iruñeak garai hartan izan zuen garrantzia ulertzeko, munduan diren ezaugarri berdineko zitadela urriei eta beste gotorleku batzuei erreparatu behar diegu laburki, testuinguru hurbilenetik hasi eta munduari begira gero. Guztiak aztertu gabe, adierazgarrienak erakutsiko ditugu. Erraza da Nafarroako geografia osoan sakabanatuta iraganeko aztarnak deskubritzea. Herriak eta hiriak eta babestu zituzten dorreen zein harresien arrastoak dauzkaten gotorleku zaharrak. Harresi horiek kondaira zaharrak kontatzen dizkigute eta, gehienean, Erdi Aroan duten sorburuetara eramaten gaituzte.
