Thousands of acres of forestland, houses are burned in fires in Turkey each year. According to the statistics by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, General Directorate of Forestry of Turkey, 3 thousand 219 hectare areas got damaged due to 2 thousand 150 forest fires in 2015. Dilara Kartalkaya, student at IUE Department of Industrial Design, wanted to take precaution against increasing number of fires and fatalities in summer, and she developed a support system for firefighters, and her inspiration for this project was a bug in Canada.

“Mümkünse perdeler de kapatılarak içeri güneş ışığı girişi azaltılmalıdır. Pencerelerin veya perdelerin açılmasının zaruri olduğu durumlarda ise klimalar geçici olarak kapatılmalıdır. Sıcak havalardan etkilenen tek cihaz klimalar değil. Buzdolapları da mümkün olduğu kadar güneş ışığı almayan noktalara yerleştirilmelidir. Ayrıca vantilatörler yalnızca önünde oturduğunuz zaman serinleme hissi verir. Kimsenin olmadığı bir odada çalışan vantilatör odayı soğutmayacağı gibi, bilakis daha da ısınmasına sebep olur. Enerji tüketimini azaltmak için bu hususlara dikkat edilmelidir. Bir odadan çıktığımızda yanan bütün ışıkları söndürmeliyiz, çünkü ampullerden yayılan ısı da ortam sıcaklığını artıracaktır.”

“If possible, shut the curtains and minimize the entrance of sunlight. If you have to open the windows or curtains, AC unit should be turned off temporarily. Refrigerators also get affected by hot weather. They should be placed away from sunlight as much as possible. Fans only give “cooler” air when you are directly in front of them. Avoid turning the fan on if you are not in the room, it would cause the room to be even hotter. Pay attention to these in order to decrease the energy consumption. When you leave a room, make sure to switch off all the lights since heat from the light bulbs would also make the room hot.”
