The jewellery was collected over a period of more than thirty years by Maudy Smith and Jaap Heij. The husband and wife team specifically prefers silver because this material, more than most, acquires a sheen from being worn. Silver is thus the ultimate symbol for interaction and dialogue between a piece of jewellery and its wearer. The people who live in the countries where the jewellery came from, however, are increasingly turning to gold jewellery. As a result, the silver jewellery that has traditionally been so highly valued is threatened with becoming more and more scarce.
