The increased share of population towards older age brings many new challenges to the modern society. The resultant organizational and economic gap can be bridged by scientific research aiming at reducing physical fatigue and improving the productivity at work and during daily life activities. One of the current lines of research of the Department of Human Physiology is neurophysiology in human-robot interaction, which is the main research topic of BruBotics. BruBotics is a research consortium and incorporates several research groups from the VUB, such as the Department of Robotics and Multibody Mechanics (R&MM), the Computational Modeling Lab (COMO), which includes the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the VUB, and the Department of Electronics and Informatics (ETRO).

Er werden echter geen verschillen gevonden in de klassieke perifere parameters (hartslag, lactaat, cardiac output) die de mindere fysieke prestatie in een mentale vermoeidheidstoestand konden verklaren, waardoor de zoektocht naar de link tussen beide soorten vermoeidheden kon beginnen en deze onderzoekslijn tot stand kwam.

Mental, physical, … fatigue is experienced in many ways, nevertheless little is known on how these different forms of fatigue interact. The interest in the interaction between mental and physical fatigue rose a couple of years ago, with Marcora and colleagues publishing some interesting results in 2009. They reported a decrease in physical performance due to a 90min mentally fatiguing task, however no differences were found in the classical peripheral parameters (heart rate, blood lactate, cardiac output) that could explain the decrease in physical performance. Therefore the search for the link between both forms of fatigue could begin and this research line was developed.
