Crevasses are associated with ‘extending flow’, that is a zone of accelerating flow, as here in Glacier de Saleina, Valais, Switzerland. These transverse crevasses form as thin cracks that widen progressively.

Stromboli guide N. Zerilli reports that the explosion was clearly heard and seen from the village of Stromboli, and that it threw very large blocks to a considerable distance from the craters, especially into the zone of the "canneto", uphill from the village of Stromboli-San Bartolo.

Nach mehr als 6 Wochen intensiver Tätigkeit des Kraters 1 ereignete sich bei den Gipfelkratern eine heftige Explosion um 23:50 Lokalzeit (21:50 GMT). Stromboli-Führer N. Zerilli berichtet, dass die Explosion vom Dorf Stromboli aus zu sehen und natürlich auch zu hören war. Es wurden sehr grosse Blöcke weit von den Kratern weggeschleudert und fielen auf die Zone mit Schilfbewuchs ("canneto") oberhalb des Dorfteils San Bartolo. Eine Gruppe von 7 Touristen wurde auf dem Gipfel im Schlaf vom Ausbruch überrascht. Vier wurden leicht verletzt. Das pyroklastische Material setzte die trockene Vegetation in Brand:

The volcanic eruptions after which the calderas were formed, were of truly gigantic proportions: The last one of these, 630'000 years ago, produced 1000 cubic kilometers of ash which got spread over almost the entire western United States:

Interessanterweise hinterlässt der Yellowstone-Hotspot ziemlich flaches Gelände, die Snake River-Ebene innerhalb der sonst von zahlreichen Gebirgen gekennzeichneten Landschaft. Ausserdem sind alle Hotspot-Positionen, die älter sind als Millionen Jahre, seismisch ruhig. Demgegenüber gibt es in einer parabelförmigen Zone beidseits des Hotspot-Pfades besonders viele Erdbeben. Die Eruption, welche die Yellowstone-Calderen bildeten, hatten gigantische Ausmasse. Die letzte, 630'000 vor heute, produzierte 1000 Kubikkilometer Asche, die über einem Grossteil des Gebiets der heutigen USA nieder ging:

Si noti come il punto caldo lasci una scia di terreno relativamente piatto, la piana dello Snake River in mezzo a regioni altrimenti assai corrugate. Inoltre, tutte le posizioni del punto caldo più vecchie di 2 milioni di anni sono sismicamente tranquille. Al contrario, una zona a forma parabolica ad alta sismicità circonda la traccia del punto caldo. Le eruzioni vulcaniche che hanno formato la caldera furono di dimensioni veramente gigantesche: l'ultima di queste, 630'000 anni fa, eruttò 1000 chilometri cubici di cenere che si disperse sopra quasi tutti Stati Uniti occidentali:

Fine-grained material covered the crater zone and the NE flank of the volcano up to the village of Stromboli. In the zone of Il Pizzo, where usually many tourists stop to look at the eruptive activity, the fallout material formed an almost continuous carpet.

Die Feldbeobachtungen erfolgten im Gebiet des Pizzo Sopra la Fossa zwischen dem Bastimento und La Fossetta. Dieser Teil des Vulkans war mit Blöcken und Asche bedeckt. Das meiste Material war lithisch (feste Blöcke) mit Grössen bis 60 cm. Geringere Mengen waren als Schweissschlacken niedergegangen, wobei einzelne bis 1.7 Meter Länge erreichten! Am meisten Blöcke lagen zwischen den Kratern und dem Pizzo. Feinkörniges Material lag in der Kraterzone und auf der NE-Flanke des Vulkans bis hinunter ins Dorf. Auf dem Pizzo, wo die Touristen normalerweise die Eruptionen beobachten, bildeten die Eruptionsprodukte eine praktische durchgehende Decke!

L'indagine sul campo è stata condotta nell'area del Pizzo Sopra la Fossa tra il Bastimento e La Fossetta. Questa parte del vulcano appariva ricoperta di cenere e blocchi. I prodotti da caduta comprendevano per lo più materiale litico di dimensione variabile fino ai 60 cm, con un minor apporto di brandelli di lava lunghi fino a 1.7 m. La densità maggiore di litici sul terreno è stata rilevata in una fascia larga circa 200 m tra i crateri e Il Pizzo. Materiale a granulometria fine ricopriva l'area craterica e il versante di NE del vulcano fino al paese di Stromboli. Nella zona del Pizzo, dove di solito molti turisti si fermano ad osservare l'attività eruttiva, il materiale da caduta formava un tappeto pressoché continuo.
