Philippe Jaussaud is professor at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Research in Didactics and History of Science at the University of Lyon 1 as well as at the National Veterinary School (unit of Pharmacy and Toxicology). He is particularly interested by the history of Pharmacy, of Chemistry and of the National Museum of Natural History. Édouard-Raoul Brygoo is honorary professor at the National Museum of Natural History. He held the Chair of Zoology (Reptiles and Amphibians) from 1977 to 1989. For many years he gathered on the scientists of the Museum an invaluable documentation from which originates the present biographical work.

In 20th century France, Théodore Monod has stood as an icon for desert exploration. In his older days, cherished by the media, he became a symbol of the loneliness, harshness, and dedication to field work in the Sahara. Founder and director of the Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire (that he managed for nearly twenty-five years), he was also a professor at the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (where he worked all over his career) and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He was a good speaker and a gifted and prolific writer in fields as diverse as zoology, botany, geology, archaeology and prehistory, ethnology and anthropology, history and history of sciences, ecology and environment, humanism and philosophy, even poetry. The present volume collects the references of his writings over ninety years (1915-2004), representing no less than two thousands one hundred and seventy-seven entries. Whereas half of them are strictly academic publications, over a hundred were written for the general public. His best-seller, Méharées, was published in twenty-two editions in several languages. Other writings reflect the philosophical and religious thoughts of this engaged naturalist concerned about the world around him. The list of taxa described by Monod, and the taxa and place names named after him, are a tribute to his interactions with the scientific community and his celebrity with the public. An inventory of the Monod archives deposited with the Central Library of the Museum concludes the work.

Les matériaux types de 20 espèces décrites dans le genre Iulus par Paul Gervais en 1837 et 1847, encore préservés dans les collections du Laboratoire de Zoologie-Arthropodes du MNHN (Paris, France), sont examinés ici.
Type material of 20 species described in the genus Iulus by Paul Gervais (1837 & 1847) is still preserved in the collections of the Laboratoire de Zoologie-Arthropodes (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, France). This material, examined here, is related, except a single case, to the tropical millipede orders Spirostreptida and Spirobolida. For eight taxa represented only by females or immatures, it is impossible to class them below the level of family or even order: thus Iulus botta can be placed in Iulida; I. lagurus and I. leucopus to Spirostreptida; I. madagascariensis, I. philippensis, I. roseus and I. sumatrensis in Spirobolida. I. vermiformis is a mixing of Polydesmida and Spirostreptida. Five other taxa were reviewed in the recent past; thus Iulus bipulvillatus Gervais, 1847 is a junior synonym of Remulopygus javanicus (Brandt, 1841) (Harpagophoridae); I. chilensis Gervais, 1847, became Autostreptus chilensis (Spirostreptidae); I. corallinus Gervais, 1847, became Trigoniulus corallinus (Pachybolidae); I. haitensis Gervais, 1847, became Haitibolus haitensis (Rhinocricidae); and I. palmiger Gervais, 1847 is a junior synonym of Narceus americanus (Palisot de Beauvois, 1817). The six re-maining taxa have never been reviewed; they enter into the following new combinations and synonymies: Iulus sublaevis (mislabeled «Chili») becomes Gymnostreptus sublaevis (Gervais, 1847) n. comb., with a new synonym Gymnostreptus microps (Porat, 1872) (Brazil); I. trimarginatus (Brazil) becomes Gymnostreptus trimarginatus (Gervais, 1847) n. comb. (Spirostreptidae); I. verreauxii (Tasmania) becomes Amastigogonus verreauxii (Gervais, 1847) n. comb. (Iulomorphidae). I. striolatus («Amérique méridionale») becomes Neocricus striolatus (Gervais, 1847) n. comb. (Rhinocricidae) and is very close to Neocricus instabilis (Carl, 1941) n. comb. (Colombia); I. Eydouxii (Vietnam) becomes Eucarlia eydouxii (Gervais, 1847) n. comb., and is a senior synonym of Eucarlia charactopyga Attems, 1938 (Pachybolidae) n. syn.; I. spinicaudus (Southern India) becomes Carlogonus spinicaudus (Gervais, 1847) (Harpagophoridae) n. comb., and may be a senior synonym of Carlogonus subvalidus (Carl, 1941).
  Early domestication and...
This paper aims to identify a series of conceptual, strategic and technological challenges facing archaeozoology (and archaeobotany) in order to better understand when, where, how and why plant and animal domestication and farming developed during the last 12 000 years. Situated at the interface of human societies and their environment, this reflection is based on examples, some of them unpublished, and on many references to animal domestication and husbandry in Eurasia, especially in East Asia, Southwest Asia and Cyprus. From a conceptual point of view, the author calls for an integrative systemic approach within the structural framework of the anthroposystem – a metasystem grouping societies and their environments, namely, their biodiversity. In order to tackle the full complexity of the system, equal attention must be paid to the biological, evolutionary and ecological components, as well as to the anthropological dynamics of human societies including technical, social and cultural aspects. To facilitate such an approach, this paper proposes a series of dynamic lines of research in order to explore the numerous gaps in our understanding of the beginnings of domestication and of the Neolithic transition, covering both causal factors and the diverse strategies developed by past societies. It pays special attention to the increasingly varied and cutting-edge technologies that can be used within these research projects, specifically quantitative data processing and databasing, direct radiocarbon dating of the bioarchaeological remains, traditional or geometric morphometrics, paleogenetics and paleogenomics, and sequential analyses of stable isotope ratios. More generally speaking, this paper aims to contribute to the development of an emerging and very promising interdisciplinary field of research.
