The idea to create an Aquarium at the University of Liège was the result of the marked interest in marine biology, oceanography, ichthyology and hydrobiology by the worthy Zoology professors, and their students, who followed each other in the University's Zoology Institute since its foundation in 1888.

Shortly after the Second World War, in 1947, Marcel Dubuisson (1903 - 1974) was put in charge of the zoology teachings. He then continued, in a spectacular manner, the tradition of the study of marine biology in Liège by notably deciding to create the Aquarium that today bears his name.

To the right of the main entrance, a lateral entry door is located at street and parking level and allows visitors with reduced mobility to enter the Institute without difficulties and easily access the large elevator that will allow them to reach the Aquarium in the basement and the Zoology Museum on the 2nd floor of the Institute (excepting the Madrepore Room).

A droite de l'entrée principale, une porte d'entrée latérale, située au niveau du trottoir et du parking, permet au(x) visiteur(s) à mobilité réduite de rentrer sans problème dans l'Institution et de se diriger en toute facilité vers le vaste ascenseur qui lui (leur) permettra d'accéder à l'Aquarium en sous-sol et au Musée de Zoologie au 2e étage de l'Institution (à l'exception toutefois de la salle des Madrépores).

The City of Liège and the University, confirming their will to maintain the Institution, negotiated a new structure of stable management, but granted a large flexibility for action, by means of the non-profit APAM Lg - Association for the Promotion of the Marcel Dubuisson Aquarium and the Zoology Museum of Liège - created December 21st 1991.

De financiële structuren hingen af van de Universiteit en de stad Luik. Deze blijven tamelijk stabiel gedurende 20 jaar, maar kende echte moeilijkheden in de loop van de jaren 80, om een echte crisis te kennen in 1990. De stad van Luik en de Universiteit, bevestigde hun wilskracht om het Insituut te behouden, en onderhandelde voor een nieuwe structuur met een vast beleid, maar die een grote soepele onderhandeling bezit door de weg te kiezen van een VZW. APAM Lg - Vereniging voor de Promotie van het Aquarium Marcel Dubuisson en het Zoölogisch Museum van Luik, gesticht op 21 december 1991. Dat sindsdien met success werkt, niettegenstaande moet het Aquarium zijn toekomst verzekeren door doeleiden op korte en lange termijn te ontwikkelen, wat het nu als doeleinde stelt.

The species are presented according to classical Systematics, that is the traditional classifications, inherited from Carl von Linnaeus and Charles Darwin.

Met ongeveer 20 000 exemplaren bewaard, opgemaakt, of onder de vorm van geraamtes., die de verscheidenheid van de fauna van de hele wereld voorstellen, de verzameling van het Museum, of het Museum van Zoölogie, zijn een uitzonderlijke pedagogische partner. De soorten zijn er voorgesteld in verband met de klassieke rangschikking, dit wil zeggen volgens een traditionele classificatie, volgens de ideeën van Carl de Linne en Charles Darwin. Deze voorstelling houdt weinig rekening met de phylogenèse, dit wil zeggen de geschiedenis van de evolutie van een soort of een groep van een verwante soort.
