Health care is also commonly provided during out-of-hours (OOH). The last decade, the organisation of OOH services in primary care changed and improved dramatically. The on-going establishment of general practice cooperatives (GPCs) represents one of the most important developments for primary health care in Flanders, Belgium and Europe. In 2013, the Belgian government provided a budget of 17.2 million euro to rearrange OOH care (e.g. facilitating GPCs infrastructure) on a national basis. Until to date, OOH care remains an important issue for the government, and a unique challenge to improve cooperation between existing OOH services.

Villages currently face challenges such as aging, decreasing services and amenities, poor quality housing, limited public transport, erosion of social cohesion .... Due to these developments, the quality of life in villages is highly pressurized. However, a good living environment remains important for coexistence and the "well being" of its residents. This research provides a practical framework for village development, in order to improve the quality of life, illustrating different solutions and their consequences. A practical framework will be developed for different policy areas (housing, care, services, labor, agriculture) with a correlating set of indicators and a development tool box.

In Belgium, emergency departments and GPs take care of urgent medical care during office and out-of-hours (OOH). Patients have access to the care provider of their choice. Over the last years protocols for triage of unplanned care have been developed by working groups in Belgium. The central aim of the present project is to establish if telephonic triage (using the phone number "1733") with professional call takers using these protocols is feasible, reliable and effective. A pilot project is established in the region Leuven-Tienen, in close collaboration with the emergency departments, the general practice OOH services and the regional emergency call centre which operate in that region. The overall research questions are 1. What is the safety and efficiency of newly developed protocols when used by call takers? 2. What is the epidemiology of unplanned medical care both during office and out-of-hours? 3. What is the influence of telephone triage on the workload and cost of care for unplanned medical problems? Other activities during the project will help to inform the public and the health professionals in the Leuven region. The two year project started May 1, 2016. Results of this study will inform stakeholders about future organisation of OOH care in Belgium. The OOH care research group is part of the General Practice group of the Department of Primary and Interdisciplinary Care Principal investigator: Hilde Philips Co-supervisor Veronique Verhoeven Junior researcher: Hanne Claessen Junior researcher: Annelies Colliers Team member: Roy Remmen

Optimising health seeking behaviour and improving the organisation of OOH care is an on-going engagement of CHA-ELIZA, but setting up additional registrations is very time consuming and the motivation of health care workers often is rather limited. Therefore, access to encrypted GPC routine data linked to pharmacy and ED data as offered by iCAREdata is necessary to live up to this ambition.

Moreover, CHA-ELIZA has longstanding expertise in measuring and improving quality of clinical practice in primary care. Antibiotic prescribing for major indications such as respiratory and urinary infections, the degree of guideline implementation in daily practice, and to some extent in OOH care, was already explored [13-17]. Access to the requested infrastructure will allow CHA-ELIZA researchers to sustain, improve and broaden this line of research.

Biparental care requires that two unrelated individuals raise their offspring together, which increases offspring survival and therefore parental fitness. However, each parent has to invest in care which comes with an individual cost and thus both parents aim to invest as little as possible. Recently, a parental strategy has been proposed that could provide a resolution for this conflict between the parents, that is taking turns in offspring provisioning, a form of cooperation that implies that parents alternate their feeding visits. However, some important aspects are still unknown, while vital for our understanding of the adaptive significance of this strategy. In particular, I aim to study (a) whether and how turn taking is an honest, evolutionary stable strategy; (b) how such a resolution of conflict between parents affects the parent-offspring conflict, as turn taking is thought to increase nest visit rates and thus offspring growth; (c) how turn taking can last, if parents may have to invest more heavily in another parental task besides provisioning; (d) how important compatibility between pair members is, and how such compatibility can be achieved; (e) and finally how the environmental conditions shape such parental strategy. To answer these questions, I will study a wild population of blue tits, a species with biparental care. I will use sophisticated tracking devices and cameras that allow detailed behavioural measurements, combined with well-designed experiments.

The Centre for General practice of the Department of Primary and Interdisciplinary Care of the University of Antwerp (CHA-ELIZA) built up large (inter)national networks as well as scientific expertise on both OOH care and data linkage. CHA-ELIZA performs research on OOH care since 2005 and actually focuses on the work of GPCs from a regional, national, and European perspective. It has established national (Antwerp, Bruges, Bilzen, Turnhout, Wachtposten Vlaanderen) and international (European research network for OOH primary health care (EurOOHnet)) [1] networks with whom cooperation in different research projects is on-going. Dr. Hilde Philips’ PhD thesis (promoters Prof. dr. Roy Remmen and Prof. dr. Paul Van Royen) highlighted the specific role of GPCs in OOH care services in Flanders using data from both GPCs and EDs of general hospitals [2-7]. Data collection for this thesis encountered many obstacles, because systematic and high quality recording for other purposes than routine clinical care appeared to be not a priority for clinicians. In addition, different software packages and varying quality of data entering hampered linking GPCs and EDs data, which is crucial in OOH health services research. That would be the other main focus of the new infrastructure, i.e. to support linkage of data from different actors in primary OOH care field. Besides information from EDs, pharmacists’ information on drug dispensing (or not) of medication prescribed (or not) represents an additional important piece of information to study primary OOH care.

It has been shown that the system of an impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be described by the Frölich Hamiltonian. This generic model has many applications in different branches of physics. One of these is the well known polaron in solid state physics which consists of an electron coupled to the phonons of the crystal. Despite the many applications there are still some important outstanding issues about the strong coupling regime of the model. The main reason these haven't been solved yet is that the strong coupling regime doesn't appear in solids. We look at this particular model in an ultra cold gas because in these it is possible to very accurately tune some of the aspects of the experiment, as for example the interaction strength between particles. This will allow us to make measurements in the regime of strong coupling for the first time. The purpose of the project is to develop the theoretical description for this system. We will calculate the response properties for arbitrary coupling and also the effect of multiple impurities. Doing the predictions we will always keep the experiment in mind which will allow us to probe the strong coupling properties of the model.

Alzheimer dementia (AD) is a very common, incurable disease. Because of changing demographics, the prevalence of AD increases rapidly. Recently, nine novel genes were identified that contribute to the risk to develop AD, and due to large scale international collaborations, several more are in the pipeline. This PhD project aims to identify the genetic polymorphisms in these genes that cause the increase in AD risk. To this end, next generation sequencing will be performed on a study population that counts >2200 patients and control individuals. Once the true genetic risk factors have been identified, a translational characterization will be performed, including genotype-phenotype correlation studies on existing and novel phenotypes, to enable translation of findings into progress in the treatment of and care for AD patients.

sacrificial anodes or impressed current, and/or by applying a coating. Painting steel is by far the most practical way to protect it. In order to obtain a long term coating, the paint has to be selected and applied in an appropriate manner (De Baere et al., 2014). A good application implicates amongst others appropriate climatological conditions. Neglecting the latter can influence the curing process of the paint, which leads to stress development in the coating and finally can result in cracking of the coating, delamination or blistering. Regulating bodies and cargo owners insist on a "GOOD" coating condition and thus demand attention towards climate conditions (temperature and humidity) during coating application. This involves a very high cost as it is expensive to paint blocks in a controlled manner, implicating the use of paint cells. This BOF project will investigate the importance of temperature and humidity and verify if this high cost is justified. First the importance of climate control is questioned. Next the importance of climate control is economically validated, which will be a continuation of the economic study that compares a ship with a long term ballast tank coating with an average performing coating.

Policy strategies to reduce child poverty are nowadays inspired by social investment and generally focused on parental employment. There is substantial overlap between childhood disability and child poverty, but for families with disabled children such employment strategy might be problematic. The risk of being poor for (families of) disabled children is associated with the fact that a) participation in the labour market is difficult for parents as they need to provide care for their children; b) families with disabled children generally have a lower socioeconomic status; and c) they face more medical and other expenses. The main objective of the research proposal is 1) to investigate the interrelationships between these factors; 2) to identify the impact of the current social policy package in Flanders on labour market participation and poverty; and 3) to examine how the prevailing policy paradigm should be recalibrated to achieve better results in terms of child poverty reduction. The research will clarify unresolved questions regarding the role of the work-care balance in families with disabled children in explaining child poverty. The results will allow us a) to formulate new hypotheses on how families with disabled children from different social backgrounds and with different care needs cope with the challenge of care and work; b) to inform policy makers on how to improve existing policy measures; and c) to add to the literature on child poverty and the work-care nexus.
