The growth of the ARTerial Network was particularly evident during the second conference held from 19 to 21 September 2009 in Johannesburg. The number of participants had more than doubled: now there were 114 delegates from 28 African countries. A newly-elected executive committee with ten members, with two representatives each from North, East, West, Central and Southern Africa, will set the course in the coming years. One of its most important tasks is formalising the network; agreement was reached in Johannesburg about the organisation’s charter.

Virtually all of the sixty artists work in the southern hemisphere. The festival's theme, Deslocamentos ('dislodgings'), runs through their videos and works, reflecting the tension between the virtual freedom of the internet and the other side of globalisation: nationalism, marginalisation and conflicts. 'When I first visited the Middle East in 1999, I started to think about this issue,' says Solange Farkas, curator and festival director. 'Artists have no time for unimportant matters. They are consumed by their mission: saving their identity. Here in Brazil, we have a special kind of civil war, between the rich and the poor. But many artists prefer to isolate themselves in their own universe.'

"The CCA is an independent institution offering a platform to new media and experimental audio-visual art by primarily Nigerian and West African artists. The international programme is an integral part of our art centre," says Silva. "In the past, I was both surprised and frustrated by the scarcity of exchanges between countries within the African continent. Exchanges with the rest of the southern hemisphere were few and far between. But we have so much in common based on our colonial past, as emerging economies and, of course, by the still relatively informal nature of our artistic infrastructure and cultural experiences," says Silva.

Bolivian Baroque - it's a unique project. In 2001, several thousand baroque music scores were discovered in two former Jesuit missions in southern Bolivia ' in Chiquitos and Moxos to be precise. Since then, the local APAC organisation, with the support of the Prince Claus Fund, the DOEN Foundation and others, has been busily unlocking the secrets of this unique cultural legacy. Not only are some of these works now part of the repertoire of the illustrious British baroque ensemble Florilegium, who bring it to life again with the help of a talented quartet of Bolivian vocal soloists, but these pieces have also now appeared on CD on the prestigious Channel Classics label, again with the assistance of the above-mentioned organisations. On Monday 31 January, this Bolivian baroque music made its debut at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw concert hall and was well received.
