The Alb-Danube District is part of the GeoPark Schwäbische Alb, and part of it also lies within the Swabian Jura (Schwäbische Alb) biosphere area. The young Danube flows through the southern part of the district. One magical point that attracts many visitors is the legendary Blautopf (literally “blue pot”) spring in Blaubeuren, in the ancient valley of the Danube. The spring, 21 meters deep, is considered Germany’s most beautiful karst spring. Blaubeuren is also the hub of archaeology in the Swabian Jura region. People were already living in caves in the surrounding area – such as the “Hohle Fels” (“Hollow Rock”) cave near Schelklingen – back in the Stone Age. It was here that researchers discovered the famed ivory figure of Venus, which, at approximately 40,000 years old, is the oldest work of art in the world. The figure is presented to impressive effect, together with other Ice Age works of art, at the Urgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Prehistory) in Blaubeuren. The caves in the Alb-Danube District deserve special consideration, since they are not only more interesting, but also more numerous than elsewhere in the mountain area. The region also includes major public caves with wonderful dripstone formations and the deep Laichingen cave, which features visitor routes to a depth of 55 m. The “höhlenreich alb-donau-kreis” brochure describes the area’s caves and springs and the unique Ice Age art found here.
