As mentioned above, company cars are gaining popularity as non-pecuniary compensation. To date, however, the literature has provided no framework in which the monetary wage, the possession and the value of a company car are the simultaneous results of negotiation between the profit of the firm and the preferences of the employee. Such an undertaking should take into account the impact of various costs on the company car decision. For example, if the employee does not receive a company car, he/she will be paid for all work-related journeys. If the employee does receive a company car, then the employer will pay a certain monthly lease amount (depending on the type of company car).

The research is a feasibility study for an area coverage and periodical biomonitoring of environmental health effects in Flanders (Belgium). It contains a toxicological, epidemiological and communication approach. The study is based on a comparison of health and disease by adolescents and adults in a contaminated and a less polluted area. The study of communication, conducted by I. Loots, signs out a concept for communication between the government, science and the public in such a monitoring network. Therefore communication channels and agreements have to be integrated.

This research project is meant to contribute to the process of reading the canonical modernist poet Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) as a transnational and global poet. It seeks to provide a more systematic focus to such readings, present a variety of relevant data not yet available to Stevens scholarship, evaluate what is critically at stake in transnationalizing the poet, and recalibrate current theories on world literature and ecocriticism by confronting them with Stevens' complex poetic thinking in this regard. The project will investigate Stevens as a "world poet" from a variety of complementary angles that may be organized into three main parts, consisting of two large case studies each: "Wallace Stevens in the World" (which is to be based on archival research into the poet's library and correspondence), "The World through Wallace Stevens" (which will draw on theories of world literature and ecocriticism), and "The World after Wallace Stevens" (which will involve case studies about Stevens' influence on a cluster of non-American poets, on the one hand, and the painter David Hockney, on the other).

Characterization is a problem that arises in numerous engineering applications and computer vision. One can characterize the boundary of an object or the entire region the object surrounds. This characterization is possible using different metrics: area, perimeter, compactness, etc. In this project we investigate another technique: decomposition in eigen-functions. For this decomposition we use Fourier-analysis and wavelets, we also investigate their (dis)advantages. Before we can decompose an object into its eigen-functions, we have to represent the object as a function on a simple domain (like a plane or sphere). The process of constructing such a representation is called parameterization. In this project our goal is to develop robust and efficient algorithms for constructing the parameterization of arbitrary objects. Applications range from computer graphics (texturing, morphing) to the medical world (registration, analysis of deformation of certain brain parts).

The ultimate goal of this research is to optimize total social welfare through both pricing and investment decisions in ports under uncertainty resulting from economic, financial and technological variations. Port infrastructure projects are characterized as large-scaled, complex, irreversible and encompassing long lead times. Because demand is highly uncertain and cyclic, mismatching capacity can result in periods of overcapacity at high cost or scarcity resulting in waiting times. This influences total and individual welfare of intertwined maritime actors, both public and private. Welfare in port infrastructure is often optimized using cost benefit analysis. This is not very well suited to deal with high uncertainty. Real Options were introduced in the literature as an alternative financial valuation method. Extension of this framework and recent literature are the bases of this research to go one step further and create a new, well elaborated methodology to calculate and maximize total and individual welfare in ports. The impact on individual actors has to be calculated for two reasons. At first, in projects with many actors, agency problems prevent individual parties to pay for this research. Independent and fundamental research is thus required. Secondly, to prevent individual actors from blocking a project that is creating welfare in general but reducing private benefits, compensational transfers between the involved actors in the project can be calculated.

In the nineties, the conflicts in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, and especially the mass displacements they have produced, have stressed the need to deal with situations of large-scale influx. During the conflicts, the reaction of the European Union Member States has been the introduction of temporary protection for the displaced persons. However, those temporary protection regimes have not been developed in a concerted way but individually. Only now the Member States are working on the harmonisation of their policy towards displaced persons coming from conflict areas. This research will address the measures the European Union is taking or should take for the establishment of a joint temporary protection policy, as well as the efforts for equitable `burden-sharing'. Doing so, two main questions will be tackled. Firstly, aiming at the well-reception of future mass refugee flows, what should be the content of such a common European instrument? Secondly, how can this instrument be fitted into a `comprehensive approach' entailing conflict prevention and resolution in the region of origin? This second question refers to the growing need for the linkage of the European Union's internal and external policy. In other words, how can a temporary protection policy towards displaced persons, principally a matter of Justice and Home Affairs, be linked to the mechanisms for conflict management of the Common Foreign and Security Policy?

"From New Stagecraft to New Cinema: Silent Film Performs the Avant-Garde" is an intermedial project geared towards redefining the evolution of cinema against developments in the historical avant-garde in performing arts. It examines why there is an apparent historiographical gap between the onset of the historical avant-garde in performing arts - described as "new" or "modern" from the 1880s onwards (Knopf 2001) - and that in cinema, where newer forms categorized as such do not appear in history books until 1919 with German Expressionism, French Impressionism and the Soviet Montage Movement (Hagener 2007). These three are characteristically defined as reflecting the devastating effects of the Great War (Kaes 2009), propelling cinema into modernity. This idea is not only essentially ahistorical, however, it also chooses to ignore the relationships that already existed between new cinematic forms and new performing arts, but have yet to be defined. This archive-driven research project will address and close the historiographical gap by demonstrating these connections in 6 well-defined case studies. It starts from the concept of new theatre forms as a "New Stagecraft," coined by theatre historian Kenneth Macgowan (1921) and built around the significant and popular work of Edward Gordon Craig, Max Reinhardt and Adolphe Appia. The influence of the New Stagecraft on silent cinema (1910-1927) will be defined scenographically and discursively through archival research in New York via Columbia University.

Aim: Our research is devoted to the mechanisms that control cell elongation in seed plants and especially in roots. Given the role of roots in exploration of soil substrate, anchorage and uptake of nutrients, the expansion of root cells is necessary to develop a functional root system. The identification of certain actors in the process of cell elongation and its control is the aim of the present research proposal. It fits in the research themes of the lab that focus on different aspects of the cytoskeleton and the cell wall in relation to cell elongation (De Cnodder et aI., 2005; Kerstens en Verbelen, 2003; Le et aI., 2004; Verbelen et aI., 2005). Promotor and co-promotor have gained substantial experience in microscopy, root development and molecular biological techniques to supervise this research proposal. The body of higher plants consists of cells that are formed in meristems. Outside the meristems, these newly formed cells generally expand considerably before reaching a stage of differentiation and maturation. The development of the Arabidopsis thaliana root epidermis is well described at the meristem level, including the quiescent center and the founder cells that give rise to the epidermal cell files in the root (Benfey and Scheres, 2000; Dolan et aI., 1993; van den Berg et aI., 1998). The Arabidopsis root is useful for the study of cell elongation. It is small, exhibits a highly predictable developmental pattern and can be easily visualized (with a normal microscope). The cells that are formed in the meristem can be easily traced when they pass through the elongation zone to reach the differentiation zone. Fast elongation of these cells occurs in the zone 400-9001lm away from the root tip. In each trichoblast cell file of the epidermis a new cell enters the elongation zone every 30 min and elongates from 35 to 150llm in about 3 hours (Le et aI., 2001). Such a fast growth needs accurate control mechanisms of the cell's physiology. The cell wall needs to be loosened to permit the anisotropic growth, e.g. by the action of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolases (XTHs, Vissenberg et aI., 2000, 2003, 2005a, 2005b) but at the same time, needs to remain strong enough to prevent lysis of the cell. Obiectives: We will identify regulatory genes that are activated at the start, the middle or the end of cell elongation depending on the transgenic line.
