No ecclesiastical space in Antwerp is as exuberantly furnished as this chapel with its extraordinary wealth of marble, painting and sculpture: a baroque homage to Our Lady. The chapel was added immediately after the consecration of the church (1621-1625). Antwerp’s Jesuits were able to circumvent the ban on further ornamentation thanks to the patronage of the three Houtappel sisters, who lived their lives as the spiritual daughters of the Jesuit order.

Dit pittoreske werk van Frans (II) Francken of diens atelier werd in de 19de eeuw opgenomen in het epitaaf van een kapelaan bij de Zusters Kapucinessen in de St.-Rochusstraat. Bij de sluiting van dit klooster in 2001 werd het schilderij samen met de epitaaflijst overgebracht als thematische aanvulling op het in dat jaar gereconstrueerde muntersaltaar, waarvan het linkerbuitenluik ‘De vrijgevigheid’ voorstelt.

In the 19th century, this scenic work by Frans (II) Francken or his studio was included in the epitaph of a curate to the Capuchin Sisters in St.-Rochusstraat. On the closure of this convent in 2001, the painting was transferred here, together with the epitaph inscription, as a thematic complement to the Minters’ Altar reconstructed in that year, the outer left panel of which depicts ‘Munificence’.

De patroonheiligen van de zusters Houtappel en hun nicht Anna ‘s Grevens, levensgroot en majestueus in wit marmer uitgehouwen door het atelier van Colyns-De Nole, zijn naast de drie Romeinse martelaressen Christina, Catharina en Suzanna, de Heilige Anna.

Rubens designed the ceiling relief in stucco, bearing the name of Mary and her symbolic honorary titles. The paintings along the walls bring further tribute to Our Lady. The patron saints of the Houtappel sisters and their cousin, Anna ’s Grevens, life-size and majestic carvings in white marble by the Colyns-De Nole studio, are alongside the three Roman martyrs Christina, Catharina, Suzanna, and St. Anne. She proudly shows a representation of her daughter, Mary, and grandson, Jesus: an extremely original depiction of the Virgin and Child with St. Anne.
