Разглежда телесното увреждане като заболяване, което се нуждае от терапия. Съответно, отношението към човека е като към пациент, инвалид, в буквалния смисъл на думата. Този модел се ръководи от схващането, че невъзможността на хората с увреждания да участват пълноценно в обществения живот се дължи на техния "недъг", а не на враждебната околна (архитектурна и културна) среда.

It is characteristic of the medical approach to focus on the body and its deficiencies rather than the abilities and competencies of the person. The physical disability is approached as an illness which needs a therapy.  Hence the attitude toward the person is an attitude toward a patient, an invalid in the literal sense of the word. This model is guided by the idea that it is impossible for people with disabilities to take part fully in social life because of their ‘deficiency’, and not that the environment (architectural and cultural) is hostile.

The problems which people seeking refuge in Bulgaria face often stem, to a great extent, from a lack of information. And this is where the role of the media comes in – the accurate information presented in an ethical way fights against prejudices in society. And the other way round – imprecise terminology, blurring the boundary between a refugee and an illegal immigrant create prejudices and therefore problems. In the worst case an article written in an incorrect manner can lead to outbursts of violence against a particular person or group. The same applies for revealing the identity of people who have escaped persecution – they could be harmed or hurt, as well as their relatives who still live in the respective country of origin.
