Въпреки двете нови двойки, тази година броят на заетите от двойки територии е 28. В допълнение има още една гнездова територия, заета от една птица. Към момента 21 двойки царски орли вече мътят. Обикновено царските орли замътват след втората половина на март и началото на април, но поради топлото време тази година, голяма част от двойките замътиха през втората седмица на март.

Despite the two new couples, this year the number of the occupied territories is 28. In addition, there is another nesting territory occupied by a bird. At this moment 21 pairs of Imperial eagles already incubate. Usually Imperial Eagles incubate after the second half of March and early April, but due to the warm weather this year, a lot of pairs started incubation in the second week of March.

Около 0,1 % от територията на Сакар е защитена по Закона за защитените територии (ЗЗТ). На територията има седем природни забележителности, обявени за опазване на ландшафти, скални образувания или редки растителни видове.

About 0,1 % of the Sakar territory is protected under the Protected Areas Act. There are seven nature sites, declared protected for their landscape, rock formations or rare plant species. In 1997 the area is declared Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.

A field team of the LIFE project “Land for Life” made a study of the birds that inhabit in the areas of the project - foraging habitats of the globally threatened Imperial Eagle. They have visited 26 trial sites in 5 protected areas. There they observed a total of 86 bird species, 59 of which probably nesting in the areas, including those with an unfavorable conservation status as Stone Curlew, Calandra Lark, Greater Short-toed Lark and Wood Lark, Tawny Pipit, and others. Eighteen of the observed species are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The value of the surveyed sites was confirmed as foraging habitats of the Imperial Eagle and the Lesser Spotted Eagle, which has been observed to hunt there.

Налице е тенденция към разораване и превръщане на някои от най-значимите за царския орел територии, стопанисвани като пасища, в обработваеми земи, лозя и овощни градини (районът около Сливен, Сакар, Дервентски възвишения, Западна Странджа).

One of the main reasons for that in Bulgaria still remains the degradation and ultimate loss of natural habitats. There is a tendency to plowing and conversion of some of the most significant for the Imperial eagle territories managed as grassland, arable land, vineyards and orchards (the region around Sliven, Sakar, Derventski vazvishenia, Zapadna Strandzha). The numerous compact Souslick colonies are destroyed and some Imperial eagle pairs are deprived of their food resources, which could lead to the departure of the territories. The mitigation of this threat is the main goal of the BSPB LIFE project "Land for LIFE".

The experts say that for the last three years there has been no change in the number of breeding eagles in our country. This is a disturbing fact because the number of the pairs is expected to increase. Unfortunately, this cannot happen due to the high mortality rate in both young and old individuals – mostly because of electric shock in electric poles of the power distribution network, as well as by illegal shooting and poisoning. The loss of food and nesting habitats also has an adverse impact because it limits the possibilities for population growth and often leads to the loss of hunting grounds around the existing nests of Imperial eagles. This year, one of the well-known pairs in the Natura 2000 zone "Derventski vazvishenia" disappeared, but a new pair in Sakar was discovered.

Compared to last year, only in one territory Imperial eagles have not been seen yet. Unfortunately, this is one of the few remaining "mountain" type pairs of Imperial eagles. Their nest has been occupied by a pair of Long-legged buzzards. In this area there is a massive plowing of grassland areas abounding with Ground squirrels and managed as grassland in the recent years. It is possible that the eagles have moved or left the territory.
