After the accident of 11 March 2011 at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP in Japan a necessity arose to reevaluate the NPPs preparedness for extreme events (by performing the so-called stress tests). In this connection, the BNRA demanded that NEC should perform such stress tests of the Belene NPP design, irrespectively of the fact that this project formally does not fall within the category of NPPs, for which the European Union requires such tests. In accordance with this demand, a Report on Additional Safety Assessment (stress tests) for Belene NPP was elaborated. In December 2011 this report was reviewed and evaluated by an IAEA international team.
