Just few days ago, 140 Ideas finalized their next murals on ecological topic – the Egyptian vulture as a symbol of the spring. This time the event took place in Vlora - the coastal touristic center of Albania. Local legend says that the Cuckoo riding an Egyptian vulture brings the spring, from where is the local name – “Cuckoo’s horse”. With no more than 10 pairs, Albania is one of the last shelters of the species in the Balkans. During a seminar for development of a brand for nature-friendly tourism in the area, the Egyptian vulture was identified as a unique element of natural and cultural heritage of Albania, from where the idea for the murals was born. The aim is to raise public interest and awareness on the environmental problems in the country, targeting not only local communities but also dozen thousands of tourists visiting Vlora each summer.

The wildlife trade involves hundreds of millions of individual plants and animals, as well as their parts and derivatives, from tens of thousands of species. International trade in species of conservation concern is monitored by CITES. From 2006-2010, CITES recorded a total of approximately 1.7 million live birds, 7 million live reptiles, 19 million reptile skins, 236,000 cat skins, 6,000 tonnes of caviar, 17 million live corals and 387 million live orchids. Illegal trade of wildlife is believed to be the third most profitable type of illegal trade, reaching an estimated US$10 billion, and is now linked to other criminal activities such as drug smuggling or even financing of terrorism. Greece, due to its geographical location is believed to play an important role in this network of wildlife trafficking. Thus, it is essential for the authorities to give this problem the relevance it deserves.

A very beautiful and emblematic for Bulgaria bird species – the Saker Falcon - is practically disappeared from our nature precisely because of the plundering of nests, traffic and illegal trade. BSPB works for many years to prevent wildlife crimes, in particular trafficking and illegal trade of wildlife in collaboration with key national institutions - Customs, the Police, Prosecution offices, the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Bulgarian Academy of Science/ Natural History Museum.

We do believe that the Egyptian Vulture fully deserves to be a star, do you? Just think about the following: it is very intelligent; there are a lot of legends of different nations about it; it servers for the natural equilibrium during its whole life by serving as a “natural sanitary”; it is a popular subject for eco-truism; it is a very good indicator for the environmental health; and its natural history seems to come from a hot novel - comes into the World on the Balkans and after heavy childhood, undertakes a full of dangers, more than 5000 km long journey to Africa, where it should survive for at least 3 years before to come again on the breeding grounds. Indeed, a live as from a hit movie and his role is always positive!

The Egyptian vulture is a migrant. In September both young and adults fly south to spend the winter months in Africa. In spring they fly over thousands of kilometers back to their nesting territories. As soon as the pairs arrive in March-April both birds start improving the nest. First they build or strengthen the base by entwining twigs and branches; then they meticulously cover the interior with wool and rags. In the end the nest is decorated with bones, tortoise shells and other leftovers from their diet. In April-May the female lays 1-3 eggs. Both parents sit on the eggs.

Some of them have traveled those thousands of kilometers many times, but for the fledglings, it will be a new and dangerous rite of passage. Their first flights from the nest were observed closely by researchers and volunteers from “The Return of the Neophron” LIFE+ project and we wanted to reach out and help the birds through their journey to Africa.

As a result of such illegal activities and vandalism and other crimes against wildlife, some iconic species such as the Saker Falcon are on the brink of extinction in the wild.

The construction of wind plants in territories with Egyptian vultures can also become a threat for the birds. Usually the best places for the wind parks are sites with constant wind currents. Vultures and other soaring birds use the currents to gather height without spending too much energy. The huge proportions of the wind generator fan, as well as their location at key sites for the vultures can lead to their subsequent death. Thus, this source of “green” energy in fact costs the lives of thousands of bats and birds. When looking for food the vultures can also enter the plants and find their death there.

BSPB’s work started with investigating the threat to the eagles and vultures in Bulgaria, and then working with grid operators such as EVN Bulgaria to retrofit insulation materials to make the lines safe. It then became clear these birds also faced similar threats at the other end of their migratory flyway. BirdLife’s UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) project and its local NGO partner, the Sudanese Wildlife Society, decided to take action. Thanks to their efforts, in 2014, the Sudanese Company for Electricity Transmission finalized the decommissioning of the Port Sudan power line and has replaced it by a new fully insulated and bird-safe line.

Who would think that trapping a bird is a difficult task? People have been doing it for hundreds, even thousands of years now, for food, for their colourful plumage, for their melodious songs... However, it would seem that they hadn’t been trying to trap an adult Egyptian vulture in its breeding territory. For the last three years, HOS field team had set out to achieve this apparently easy mission in different areas of Greece but with no success. Until now. Against all odds – with less than 15 pairs left in the country, statistics obviously weren’t in their favour! -, last week the field team trapped an adult male in the area of Konitsa (Western Greece).
