Especially in my resists (a technique I learned from John Woodcock) I try to hide details that make a contribution to the calligraphy itself. Nevertheless, I find it is most essential to aim for good letterforms as the startingpoint of all work and hope for beauty to follow.

He decided to find what encompassed the Hebrew word for God, so using the page as his «Rosetta Stone» he was able to decipher what letters entailed the Hebrew name for the Lord.

Personally, my perception of ′beautiful calligraphy′ is not constant but ever shifting. At first I was drawn towards well executed, formal writing but quite soon I became more interested in free flowing and more modern ways of writing, still looking however for extreme elegance in these shapes. Finally I ended up being captivated by rude, awkward but all the more expressive letterforms. It may look like taking several steps back and one may wonder why anyone who has worked hard to attain a fairly high level of elegance would want to throw all that away. The answer is simple: in time, one gets bored by perfection or by aiming at it.

I am an active member of the Fairbank Calligraphy Society of Victoria, BC, Canada, and of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and CLAS in the UK. I was taught Italic handwriting at the age of 14 and a teacher in the Johnston tradition introduced me to calligraphy at high school. My family in Greece, strongly rooted in the arts, encouraged the study of the Byzantine and Classical writing traditions and art for inspiration. I studied Art History in Greece and in Victoria, BC., so my interest in the history of the calligraphic tradition is strong. Although much of my work is in English, I am keen to connect to my Greek heritage and create work that explores and bridges the richness of “cultural identity”.

Her qualifications as a Trainer and Group Facilitator were a great aid in establishing her own Education Centre, providing long-term intensive lettering workshops for students aiming to work at a higher standard. Students worked progressively through a series of modules designed to provide a thorough grounding in calligraphy and its associated disciplines. The program was unique in offering all the major styles in both broad-nib and sharp-pointed nib pen.
