The exhibition is part of a project representing various artists and groups from the Czech Republic and Bulgaria thus connecting the two art scenes. In March 2015 the Czech Center in Sofia hosted the first show from the project titled “Sisters, hold on!” by Václav Girsa. In April 2015 there followed the exhibition “Churches and Drawings” by the duo photographers Lukáš Jasanský & Martin Polák at the Lastici Gallery in Plovdiv. At the same time the Czech Center in Sofia hosted the installation “All Tomorrow Exotic” of the two Bulgarian authors Lubri and Voin de Voin. During this time the show of Jiří Kovanda titled “Nothing in the Middle” took place in Sariev Contemporary gallery in Plovdiv. The cycle ends with the exhibition “Socio-fiction” by Zbyněk Baladrán in the ICA Gallery, the show of the Rafani Group in the Czech Center and the talk with Jiří Kovanda also there.

The exhibition presents new works by Aksiniya Peicheva, Denica Milusheva, Ina Valentinova, Martin Penev, Miglena Yoncheva-Nikolova, Radoslav Ninov, Radostin Sedevchev, Sophia Grancharova and Stefan Ivanov. It is the final stage of the project for continuous education for young artists initiated by the Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia in the beginning of 2017. In a way this exhibition is engaging with the notion of “young artist” in Bulgaria today. In spite of the fact that the artists are members of the same generation, each one of them has own artistic principles, strategies and personal preferences that they work with and use in order to integrate themselves within the global contemporary art scene of today.

Dimitar Solakov is one of the most active young artists from Bulgaria. The project “Creation and Destruction, or the responsibility of fatherhood” was developed between 2014 and 2016 with a very clear motivation. The starting point was: “When I learned that I am going to be a father I started thinking about what it means to create and to destroy”. The installation was exhibited for the first time in 2016 at the 56th October Salon in Belgrade.

The presentation is within the classical exhibition format – a massive survey that most artists are doing in mid career. These are surveys of accomplishments, summing up and testing new development vectors usually documented in an impressive publication. However, as it is usually with Ivan Moudov the traditional things in this project are inseparable from the doubt and the irony for the specific tradition. On the face of it the artist is offering all that is expected of him – a display of the results of his work; a publication which is covering his oeuvre; the possibility to buy works. On top he is offering the not-yet obligatory but, according to the market lore, ever more present extra – a certificate of authenticity which is the proof that each work is unique and he is the author.

Krassimir Terziev is one of the most important Bulgarian video artists. His works are often dealing with problems of identity, political memory, and history in the globalized world while at the same time investigating the language of the digital technology used today. The artist uses the human point of view in order to track the way digital media are creating illusions, manipulating consciousness and producing modern myth or even cults.

The mission of the festival is to firmly place Nepal on the global map as a venue for the contemporary arts, allow for artistic collaboration and exchange among international and local artists, and use art as a platform for critical reflection and the sensitization of society.

We are aiming at organizing our Christmas show with artists’ editions – works of distinctly object- and souvenir-like appearance as a counterpoint to the dark 2016, a year full of disappointments, unfulfilled hopes, unresolved and many new problems. After this turbulent and strange year the holydays are nonetheless approaching and with them – the promise of a new beginning. We are trying for a joyful, enchanting and amusing display with a real Christmas tree on which, under which and around which art products are fabulously abundant. We are exploring what and how are participating artists thinking of the toy...
Our holyday season project titled "Dress Up" offers t-shirts in various sizes and colors supplemented and "decorated" by some of the most famous contemporary Bulgarian artists. The fragments and quotations from their works that are familiar to the audience, as well as the design, which is custom-made for the occasion, are produced in a very limited edition. However, they are still accessible to everyone interested in contemporary art.
Our traditional Christmas Show is presenting once again limited artists’ editions (and unique pieces too) by some of the most well-known contemporary Bulgarian authors. This year ICA-Sofia is popularizing again contemporary art in a way adapted for the Christmas-and-New Year’s holiday season – challenging as content, avant-garde as form, and accessible as pricing.

The Kathmandu International Art Festival is the largest international art event held in Nepal and will be held as a nonprofit, noncommercial festival every three years by the Siddhartha Arts Foundation. Each edition of the festival is based on a particular theme. The festival is about bringing like-minded individuals together in a contemporary aesthetic experience. This is about art for a social cause.

For his project “Socio-fiction” Zbyněk Baladrán, together with curators Edith Jeřabkova from the Prague association Are and Iara Boubnova from the ICA-Sofia, has prepared four related video installations: “Night of the World”, “Socio-fiction”, “Preliminary Report / Case Study”, and “Approximation of Infinite Sequences”. They showcase his work in a temporal and thematic continuity. The works of Baladrán might be seen within the anthropological and ethnographic approaches for investigating society through art that have become especially productive lately. Zbyněk Baladrán is dealing in practice and in theory with the metaphor of archaeology as a creative method. He is interested in what kind of an image will humanity come up with and in what kinds of societal systems and regimes will it function. The artist is using video, text and installation. His works could be characterized as an analytical search for interconnections in the past and its construction as an attitude towards the dominant epistemological models. Baladrán is one of the first Czech artists to interpret analytically the format of the video in relation to the leftist heritage of the past. He is using references to the avant-garde and analysis of the new aesthetics of information distribution, lectures and the working environment. Together with Ján Mančuška and Vit Havránek he is exploring the rhizomatic models of functioning of societal structures. In spite of the rational and analytical approach, the works of Baladrán are distinguished by their sensory quality. The new installation at the ICA Gallery will provide the Bulgarian audience with an opportunity to meet for the first time the works of this author.
  PREHOD for Sale -
Quite naturally this year we decided to dedicate our Christmas show of artists’ editions – works with a specifically souvenir-like substance, to the 25 years since 1989, the period of transition (prehod) in Bulgaria. These years were diverse and complex, painful and successful, years of optimism and disappointment; they are definitive for many of us. Our attitude to the issues in this show has been through a lot of deliberations… It is possibly defined by attitudes of irony and sarcasm. These are typical for the art of the PREHOD; maybe they are a sign of confusion, of the change in value systems, frustration and even desperation. However, for all those years since Bulgarian contemporary art is on the world scene self-irony and sarcasm are some of its main tools. The endless and traumatic period of transition (prehod) turned out not to be too popular for our art, however. We hope that through this show of attractive and amusing “objects” created by artists, we will not only challenge the theme of transition but will also manage to turn our back on it at least metaphorically while keeping only souvenirs for ourselves. We do acknowledge that an objective evaluation of the years of one’s life is not possible. However, we tried to deal with those years with a sense of humor. That is why we titled our show “Prehod for Sale”. The title uses one of the most popular newspaper formulas from these past years – we announce that all is for sale and we use a typically local word which is spelled in Chatitca (writing in Bulgarian with Latin characters) or Methoditca (from the name of Method, St Cyril’s brother, one of the inventors of the Cyrillic script) as some would prefer to have it. For us this is a sign of the times. The limited edition of the works by the artists makes it possible to produce additional samples should there be strong interest from the audience.
