During the summer itself after work I was rather contemplative about the LGBT situation in Armenia and the World as a whole. I had edited documents about and read up on the actual state of LGBT people in Armenia and it showed me the reality of the work ahead. I was shocked to hear of the police ignoring the rights of gay victims of assault, the horrible things Armenians would do to their LGBT brothers, and how public opinion promotes rampant hostility towards gay individuals.

On October 1 2010, a video appeared on Facebook and Youtube which was telling about the brutal murder of twenty year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan. On 30th  September 2010, at 20:00, a report was received at the police station of Masis from the hospital that Zaruhi Petrosyan, born in 1990, was delivered there with “cranial brain hematoma, closed fracture of middle phalange of the second finger of the right hand and bruises in different parts of her body”. The same day Zaruhi Petrosyan was transferred to “Erebuni” medical center where she passed away on October 1, at 03:00.

In Armenia, there is no law regarding domestic violence which will prevent and solve the problem. Furthermore, no trained specialists, police officers or judges who have to properly address existing domestic violence cases. This is partly due to their biased belief that women have provoked the violence themselves. Similarly, no legal mechanisms have been established to protect the individuals affected by domestic violence and to punish guilty ones. The majority of women building their case to the Court have to wait too long, before they can proceed with their case.  Nevertheless, judges lack the understanding on domestic violence and quite often do not differentiate it from other forms of violence.
