The most unexpected of things occurred on the night of June 13, 1949. That night was a surprise to locals, who had passed through the hell of Stalinizm, and to the repatriates, who were adapting to the whims of the totalitarian system with difficulty. The Soviet repressive machine had been conducting mass deportations since the 1920s, but this type of punishment had bypassed Armenians. This was the first case when Armenians were expelled en masse. But it wasn’t ethnically motivated. As we see in the historical documents, the contingent of Armenian exiles was given the particular name of “Dashnak” and had three sub-groups:

Following Father’s arrest and the confiscation of all our property, our family’s financial situation became desperate. The only remaining salable items were our personal clothing, consisting of suits, sweaters, coats, anderwer and shoes, as well as some kitchen items. Every Sunday, two or three of us brothers would take this items to the famous Yerevan sev shooga (black market). Most sellers were repatriates, while the buyers were the local well-to-do, including government officials, uniformed officers and many Russians, both man and woman looking for zagranichni (foreign-made) items. Prices, although set by the sellers, were quite negotiable.
