We are two Swedish students from Lund University, Gender department who have been given the great opportunity to be interns at Public Information and Need of Knowledge NGO for almost four months. Our time in Armenia has been full of impressions. Most of our time has been spent in Yerevan and we have gotten to know the city quite well. During our stay we have been visiting Matenadaran where we saw the huge monument of Mashtots; we have been to the National History Museum and seen everything from the world’s oldest shoe to big phalluses; we have been walking around the stands at the vernisage with both old USSR objects and pieces of traditional Armenian art; we have been to the Cascade with its amazing view of Yerevan and we have been to Opera and seen Aida.

Thousands of our compatriots suffer from cancer and other life-limiting diseases, which are accompanied by severe and unbearable pain. Pain makes the patient bed-ridden for months and even for years. Very often the disease gradually develops leaving a huge prairie after itself named unbearable pain, which becomes a real hell for the patients and their family members.

Hermaphroditos is a hero of a Greek myth who is half-man and half-woman as Ovid in his “Metamorphoses” informs. Hermaphroditos is the son of Hermes and Aphrodite (hence his name and the term “hermaphrodite”). In ancient times Hermaphroditos had temples and oratories in his name. Cyprus is one of the places of Ancient Greece where we meet the traces of worship of Hermaphroditos. According to Macrobius, there was a bearded statue of a male Aphrodite, called Aphroditos created by sculptor Aristophanes (not to be taken to be the previous Aristophanes, the hero of Plato’s book – editor’s note). Artistic representations of Aphroditos have been found from the 7th century BC, which suggests it was an archaic cult, as Yulia Ustinova points out in her book: “The Supreme Gods of the Bosporan Kingdom. Celestial Aphrodite & the Most High God”.

Probably the problem is neither the doctor’s inhumanity, nor the lack of their knowledge and experience. The entire problem is the stereotype and fear towards drugs that prescription of these means can lead to the increase of drug users. There is an Opiophobia formed in the society. Certainly this scenario cannot be excluded, but it is nothing when compared to the huge amount of drug trafficking. This is exactly why power structures scrupulously check medical institutions and healthcare workers. Additionally, one must fill out a number of registration forms and references for a single injection in postoperative period. Moreover, the injection can be made only in the presence of a physician. After that, many notes are taken in different documents, committees convene to destroy vials while drug users continue to acquire narcotic drugs the way they usually do. But the patient who suffers from severe pain remains without a painkiller.

For two weeks we have practiced at PINK Armenia NGO, and we got the opportunity to get to know the inspiring people working there, who gave us new experiences and good memories to cherish later. The work they do, the attachment they have for it is inspiring and promising. We got insight in their amazing work in terms of which they protect and advocate the universal use of human rights for all, particularly for vulnerable groups, they provide basic and general information on democracy, human rights, civil society, safer sex, they activate and empower the youth. The existing stereotypes and the lack of education in society concerning LGBT, gender equality, marginalised groups are the greatest obstacles in this work, and to overcome them the Armenians need to radically change their very traditional view on gender, sex and diversity.

Regardless the fact that the number of HIV-positive people in Armenia is comparatively low, it increases rapidly every year (on average the HIV-positive population in Armenia is 0.02%, yet according to the estimates the number is 10x bigger, and in some social groups the prevalence of the infection is pretty high). In a state which goes through profound social-economic, political and cultural changes, factors that contribute the spread of HIV are the uniquely negative attitude toward the infection based on fear, discrimination against HIV-positive people, low level of awareness about the infection among the population, stigma against sex workers and other social groups.
