Thousands of our compatriots suffer from cancer and other life-limiting diseases, which are accompanied by severe and unbearable pain. Pain makes the patient bed-ridden for months and even for years. Very often the disease gradually develops leaving a huge prairie after itself named unbearable pain, which becomes a real hell for the patients and their family members.

The lack of awareness about paraphilias makes ground for many stereotypes and false information. In particular, paraphilias are identified with sexual orientation. For example, pedophiles are identified as homosexuals and that causes prejudices and discriminatory behavior towards homosexuals. Meanwhile, pedophilia is not connected to sexual orientation, which means that both homosexual and heterosexual people can have sexual addiction towards children.

Public Information and Need of Knowledge NGO was created in 2007 by a group of young and enthusiastic civil society activists who aimed to establish an organization which would be dedicated to the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, HIV and human rights protection. It is more popular in the mainstream public as PINK with its English abbreviation, and in international arena to differ from similar organizations of other countries, they call it PINK Armenia.

Workers of the organization have held informative campaigns in all marzes of Armenia, they’ve met with girls and women of rural communities and given counseling to them. Judy Norsigian is currently the Executive Director of “Our Bodies, Ourselves”, the revolutionary women’s health and sexuality bestselling book. She is an internationally renowned speaker and writer on a wide range of women’s health concerns, including abortion and contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, genetics, and reproductive technologies. She has appeared on numerous national television and radio programs in the United States. We caught up with Judy during her most recent visit to Armenia and learned more about her and her groundbreaking work.

All of my coworkers and friends in Armenia have made my experience unforgettable. Not only have I met native Armenians, but diasporans like myself from all over the world, and even a few non-Armenians – Swedes, Danes and Austrians – who like myself, decided that they had something to offer to and something to learn from Armenia. Working at PINK I had the opportunity to attend a youth training on gender and equality, do research and write articles for publication, take part in an AIDS Day march, handing out leaflets that hopefully left some of their readers more aware, and basically just take part in daily Armenian civic activism and participation.

We are two Swedish students from Lund University, Gender department who have been given the great opportunity to be interns at Public Information and Need of Knowledge NGO for almost four months. Our time in Armenia has been full of impressions. Most of our time has been spent in Yerevan and we have gotten to know the city quite well. During our stay we have been visiting Matenadaran where we saw the huge monument of Mashtots; we have been to the National History Museum and seen everything from the world’s oldest shoe to big phalluses; we have been walking around the stands at the vernisage with both old USSR objects and pieces of traditional Armenian art; we have been to the Cascade with its amazing view of Yerevan and we have been to Opera and seen Aida.

Due to the active cooperation with several organizations which are concerned with sexual health, HIV/AIDS and human rights protection issues in Armenia, “Public Information and Need of Knowledge” NGO has conducted various public and social events in Yerevan and in the regions of Armenia. These strong ties between the partners have brought them to the idea of creation of “Advocacy Group on AIDS”. The initiators of it are Public Information and Need of Knowledge, Real World Real People, Women Resource Center and Positive People Armenian Network NGOs. The group aims to take joint actions for the rights advocacy and rights protection of vulnerable groups and bring public attention to the importance and urgency of sexual health issues.

On the other hand, just like twenty years ago, HIV is a sexually transmitted infection, and just like in the beginning of the epidemic, men having sex with men (MSM) are still a vulnerable group nowadays. Being vulnerable means there are social, economic, political factors that affect the access to information on HIV/AIDS, access to healthcare, and the opportunity to make decisions regarding one’s health and on the quality of life in general.

Nowadays women deal with various violations to their rights, such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, gender inequality etc. Feminist civic activists joined forces in order to solve these problems and break existing stereotypes. Today’s feminist group success example is the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women, which was created by 7 local NGOs. The goal of the coalition is to raise awareness on violence against women, change existing mentality concerning domestic violence, provide defense and support to female victims of abuse. The activities of Coalition now vary from organization of different meetings, events, trainings devoted to domestic violence and women rights issues.

People with disabilities have serious problem in Armenia when it comes to realizing their right to rest and leisure in the majority of cultural leisure sites. These are mostly unavailable to persons with different types of disabilities: the territory is not accessible for persons with physical disabilities because of the absence of elevators and ramps, there are neither appropriate informational resources written in Braille system for persons with sight issues, surdo interpreters for servicing customers who have hearing disabilities. The issue is essentially worrying, as it becomes a base for artificial inequality, fostering the isolation of persons with disabilities. This in turn becomes a foundation for further development of myths and stereotypes regarding persons with disabilities.

Hermaphroditos is a hero of a Greek myth who is half-man and half-woman as Ovid in his “Metamorphoses” informs. Hermaphroditos is the son of Hermes and Aphrodite (hence his name and the term “hermaphrodite”). In ancient times Hermaphroditos had temples and oratories in his name. Cyprus is one of the places of Ancient Greece where we meet the traces of worship of Hermaphroditos. According to Macrobius, there was a bearded statue of a male Aphrodite, called Aphroditos created by sculptor Aristophanes (not to be taken to be the previous Aristophanes, the hero of Plato’s book – editor’s note). Artistic representations of Aphroditos have been found from the 7th century BC, which suggests it was an archaic cult, as Yulia Ustinova points out in her book: “The Supreme Gods of the Bosporan Kingdom. Celestial Aphrodite & the Most High God”.
