On this World Food Day, we highlight the close link between climate change, sustainable agriculture and food and nutrition security with the message that “The climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.” Without concerted action, millions more people could fall into poverty and hunger, threatening to reverse hard-won gains and placing in jeopardy our ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year’s World Food Day theme “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition” is an invitation to us to consider just how well the system is working and what can be done to improve it. The official World Food Day theme – announced at the start of every year by FAO – gives focus to World Food Day observances and helps increase understanding of problems and solutions in the drive to end hunger.

Samvel Sevada, RA honored artist and Associate Professor of Department of Camera-work and Artistic Photography of the ASPU, who is the initiator and artistic director of the event, mentioned, "Our works are talking instead of us. I encourage my students to be honest and to preserve their artistic creativity". During the two-day event UNDP officials, social entrepreneurs, impact business leaders, representatives of the government and academia held interactive thematic discussions exploring the potential of leveraging impact investment, social enterprise, and impact business to achieve the universally adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and pushing global development to a new qualitative level. WHO and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) work together to set international standards for safe food. They assess the safety of new food technologies, and help countries to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks of food-borne disease. These agencies also help countries build their own capacity to predict and manage food-borne disease risks.

16 October 2014 – FAO Deputy Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia and FAO Representative for Armenia Tony Alonzi participated in the International Scientific Conference on “Food safety and food security issues in Armenia” organized by the Armenian National Agrarian University. In recognition of long standing cooperation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of UN with the Armenian National Agrarian University Mr. Tony Alonzi on behalf of FAO Armenia was gratified and awarded with a gold medal.

Food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals is responsible for more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. Potential new threats to food safety are emerging all the time. Changes to the way food is produced, distributed and consumed, the emergence of resistant bacteria, and increases in travel and trade make it difficult to manage pathogens and contaminants once they are in our food supply.

Agriculture and food systems must become more resilient, productive, inclusive and sustainable. To bolster food security in a changing climate, countries must address food and agriculture in their climate action plans and invest more in rural development.
