My father was on the list to repatriate to Armenia. And he went, with his wife, and settled in Vanadzor. He was a teacher in Aleppo. My uncle has children and grandchildren there. He’s now deceased. He was born in 1917.

My father was able to get a car from the French, because they didn’t want to get involved in those matters. Was it Kachin Beljan or someone else? I can’t remember the last name. They went with him. They were able to kill the German officers. They put everybody into two trucks and brought them to the village. They were distributed the soldiers among families. There was a soldier from Gharabagh, from Alaverdi, from Stepanakert…From all the Armenian regions. I have the list.

1946 թվականին սկսվեց ներգաղթի շարժումը, մեծ ոգեւորություն կար հայկական համայքում, քննարկում էին գնալու-չգնալու հարցը. մի մասը ոգեւորված էր հայրենիք վերադառնալու մտքով, մյուսը անտարբեր, մեկ ուրիշն էլ «որտեղ հաց, այնտեղ կաց» սկզբունքով, դաշնակցականներն էլ հիշեցնում էին սովետական վայրագությունները եւ կյանքի ցածր մակարդակը։ Հայրս առաջիններից էր, որ արձանագրվեց մեկնել ցանկացողների ցուցակում։

The immigration movement began in 1946. There was great jubilation in the Armenian community. There were debates about whether to go or not. One section was delighted at the prospect of returning to the homeland. Another section was indifferent. Another section abided by the principle “wherever your bread is buttered”. The Dashnaks reminded us about the soviet cruelty and the low standard of living. My father was one of the first to register on the list of wanting to go. He had no illusion about having an easy life in Armenia. He had a good idea that life wouldn’t be easy in a country just coming out of a war.
