The drawing workshops at TUMO are guided by one principle above all else: “Everyone is unique. Each student has his or her own story and set of experiences that makes them who they are, but the second they try to mimic someone else, they lose that originality. During the workshops, we expose them to different artists, but always encourage them to develop their own style,” explains workshop leader Khoren Matevosyan. First, teens pick animation as a focus area within our interactive learning program, TUMO path. After completing activities on the path, they are able to participate in the first session of our animation workshop. According to workshop leaders, this is one of the most important and interesting sessions. It’s here that students first become familiar with the history and various types of 2D animation. This includes screening examples in anticipation of what teens will soon be creating. Workshop leader Hakob Muradyan notes, “It’s all motivation to love animation.” Throughout the remaining workshop sessions, students become fully immersed in learning about Adobe Flash (which, as a matter of fact, will soon be changed to Toon Boom, the new industry standard) and finally create movement with a character of their own design.

Already armed with a beginner’s understanding of what’s possible with motion graphics and the tools at their disposal, TUMO teens are given the chance to flex their creative muscles. Students pick any theme or topic and create a short video about it. Using After Effects and Illustrator, students must demonstrate some of the various techniques and skills they’ve learned in the level regarding lighting, shape animation, working with cameras and creating a 3D environment.

At this stage, students receive a foundation in different musical genres, instruments, singing techniques, and learn skills like layering sounds and tracks. To edit their tracks, workshop participants learn Logic Pro X software, which they continue using as they climb the workshop levels. Teens create rhythms and beats with a MIDI keyboard and, by the end of the level, produce their very own one-minute-long track. “The most important thing that a student learns during the first level is communication,” says workshop leader Khachatur Hayrapetyan. “Teens learn how to shape their worldview through music and also look at music through a different, more knowledgeable and professional lens.”

Ի մի բերելով 3 մակարդակների ընթացքում ստացած գիտելիքները՝ ուսանողը կարողանում է հասկանալ իր ուժեղ կողմերը և ստեղծել սեփական ցանկությամբ ընտրված մի նախագիծ։ Sampling-ի, mashup-ի, beatmaking-ի, dynamic processing-ի և այլ  երաժշտական տեխնիկաների շնորհիվ ուսանողը ստեղծում, ձայնագրում և մշակում է երաժշտություն, որը դառնում է իր «այցեքարտը» Թումոյի երաժշտական նախագծերից որևէ մեկին մասնակցելու համար։

By combining the skills they’ve gained thus far, students, understanding their strengths and preferences, create a project of their own choosing. Thanks to sampling, mashups, beat making, dynamic processing, and other techniques, the piece TUMOians produce at this level becomes their calling card for participating in any future TUMO music projects. According to Khachatur, “a young student who has mastered the program is able to create music and learn news to work with sound. Most importantly, students’ perspective on music changes, and they’ve learned to independently analyze and critique music.”
