Asked whether he will ever practice photography again, Al Ani dismissed the question: “I miss it, but I feel too old for it and have suffered the loss of my ability to see and move about.” The eighty-five-year-old views the next generation of Iraqi photographers with mixed feelings. The country has lost many talented artists to emigration, and he is worried about his country’s cultural legacy. Most places he knew in the centre of old Baghdad simply do not exist any more. “I lived there, I grew up there, and I loved it very much,” he says. “All of it has been devastated, and most of it has vanished.”

Ruya has commissioned ‘Calling Calouste’, an exhibition of new Iraqi photography. The show will be held at the Ministry of Culture’s Gulbenkian Building in Baghdad that opens on 1 October. The exhibition, conceived by Ruya’s Iraq Director, Furat al Jamil, in close collaboration with the artists, brings together young, emerging and established photographers from across Iraq.

Ruya Foundation invited the artist Francis Alÿs to Iraq. After hosting a workshop with artists and art students in Baghdad, Tamara Chalabi, chairman of Ruya went with Alÿs on a research trip to the Yezidi shrine of Lalish and two refugee camps, in the Dohuk Province, in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region of Iraq. The purpose of the visits was for Alÿs to explore the camps and the possibility of creating a work related to the camp and the people living there, in collaboration with Ruya Foundation.

Born and raised in Baghdad, Salam Atta Sabri (b.1953) trained as a ceramicist and lived in the USA and Jordan for 16 years. He returned to Baghdad in 2005, where he produced some 300 drawings between 2012 and 2015 that he has never shown in public. These intensely personal works exhibit the experience of an artist striving to create under the shadow of a crumbling arts infrastructure. One hundred of these drawings will go on display to the public for the first time at the National Pavilion of Iraq at 56th Venice Biennale. An audio extract of Ruya’s interview with the artist is available in Arabic.

Al Ani made photographic tours of Iraq and was the first photographer to shoot aerial views of the country. The exhibition will include aerial views of Liberation Square and the Mirjan Mosque, both in Baghdad, and ruins at Ctesiphon, the ancient capital of the Parthian Empire. By the 1960s, when competing groups were struggling for power in Iraq, Al Ani was exhibiting his work in America and Europe, as well as throughout the Middle East. A number of works on display will depict a trip the artist made to Berlin to exhibit his work in 1965. By the 1980s, the increasingly authoritarian atmosphere of the Saddam Hussein regime made it impossible to photograph in public and Ali Ani stopped making work.

Working with musicians, music collectors and students in Baghdad, Mr. Kilius showed examples of his field work, documenting folk and ritual music traditions in South Asia and the Gulf. They discussed the importance of documenting and archiving Iraq’s own musical traditions.

We invited ethnomusicologist Rolf Killius to create and launch the sound art project, Baghdad Wahid. Here contemporary sounds from the city were recorded as a personal reflection on Baghdad and its musical traditions. There’s a degree of confusion, of not-knowing-where-to-begin, when it comes to embodying a country like Iraq in a work of art. Despite a succession of conflicts, destruction, corruption, and vile sectarian ferment it is a country bursting with creative talent and kind, tolerant people. There is so much pain which I reference in my work. Yet I conceive of Iraq as a date-palm that cannot be uprooted. Iraq has had its setbacks but it has never disappeared. Baghdad has fallen time and again and the Iraqis have rebuilt it. Iraq’s strength lies in a history that reaches back seven thousand years into the past.

Latif Al Ani (b. 1932, Baghdad) is known as the founding father of Iraqi photography. From the 1950s to the 1970s, during a period of increased cosmopolitanism and openness in the country, he was prolific in documenting everyday life in Iraq. His vast archive, of black-and white realist photographs, provides a unique record of mid-twentieth century Iraqi experience but from the 1980s it had fallen into obscurity. It is only now that his work is being rediscovered by an international audience, after being seen at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. Hatje Cantz has published the artist’s first monograph in collaboration with the Ruya Foundation.

Ali Rashid is an Iraqi-born painter and poet based in the Netherlands. Rashid trained at the Institute of Fine Art in Baghdad and later at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague. Rashid lived through the Iran-Iraq War and the first Gulf War and his work is a direct response to the ongoing violence and conflict in Iraq. In his earlier work, the artist drew detailed and chaotic scenes incorporating human and mythological figures, today he produces large scale abstract paintings and ink drawings which incorporate the written word, collage and media clippings. Rashid argues that his work depicts the “language of war.”

The curator Aneta Szylak held a second workshop for artists in Baghdad with the Ruya Foundation. I selected footage related to travel, journeying and moving. The group of musicians spend a lot of the time up in the air on the plane and in the airport. They are symbols of displacement. I wanted to highlight the political dimensions of transportation. To get to Amman from Baghdad, they flew with the U.S. army on a Hercules plane – in Iraq we call it a hamouda. Then they got on a commercial flight to JFK Airport, New York City, and from there they took a bus to D.C. In D.C., they visited the National Air and Space Museum, as well as the city’s biggest mosque, and its oldest church. I have also used objects from the trip, such my sister’s travel documents, and the medal from the Kennedy Centre.

Haider Jabbar (b. 1986) started his career in film, working in art direction on short and feature films. He received a classical art education at the Baghdad Institute of Fine Arts but succeeded in escaping canonical restrictions and now works in a very intimate and direct style of painting. He has had two solo shows in Baghdad, the second entitled RCU (Respiratory Care Unit) in 2013 in homage to his late mother. Now a refugee in Turkey, Jabbar is continuing his career as an artist by way of a grant from the Ruya Foundation. His Pavilion works will focus on those who have been killed by ISIS in Iraq and can be understood as a personal registration of human catastrophes. He writes to Ruya about his work, and his time in Samsun.

The 28 participants were artists and students from Baghdad, Sulaymaniya, Hilla and Erbil. Ahead of the workshop Szylak asked them to bring a photograph that represents a place in Iraq that has been important in their lives. The place may still exist today, or it has been damaged by the forces of war, urbanisation, and property development. “These images were the basis for a longer conversation that the artists had about their visual understanding of Iraq. What we have as imagery to represent our lives is often different from the daily lives that we lead”, Szylak explains.

Of the six living artists, five have been commissioned by Ruya to create new work for the Pavilion. A great number of artists working in Iraq today continue to abide by an orthodox aesthetic tradition that has been limited by mid-century education trends and the lack of cultural exchange in Iraq in recent decades. All of the Ruya Foundation’s work seeks to nurture and promote artists who move beyond these paradigms and the selection of contemporary artists for the Pavilion reflects that mission. Hattom and Sleman will both present installation work, Abbas, Alfraji and Fadhil will present video work and Arkady will present photography.

After your film The Wounded Camera, you fled from Iraq to Finland. What made the film so controversial? While I was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts, I was harassed by my professors, and I fled to Kurdistan. I was interrogated more than once by a teacher there, who was a member of the Ba’ath Party. He told me “if you don’t behave, I will put you behind the sun”. What did that mean? I have no idea. I hadn’t been politically active. Saddam was still in power, so anyone who did so faced execution. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq was autonomous. Iraqis who went there were automatically labelled as dissidents in Baghdad – which put my family in danger. I gave myself a Kurdish name, Ouazad Othman which means free man in Kurdish. I made the film The Wound of the Camera, about the forced migration of millions of people when Saddam’s army entered Kurdistan after the uprising in 1991. The people migrated towards the mountain, where they were stranded and left homeless at the borders. The film was a direct criticism of the authorities and their treatment of the Kurdish population. It was a Kurdish story.

Though Szylak has worked with artists from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for over ten years, this is her second trip to Baghdad with the Ruya Foundation. “Working in Sulaymaniya is a bit easier, as artists in the Kurdistan Region are not as isolated. There are less travel restrictions for visitors to the KRI and more local artists go abroad to study,” Szylak explains. “This is not the case in Baghdad, but the city has other strengths. For example, due to the nature of the arts education, the artists here have developed incredible skills and craftsmanship which they can now apply to more conceptual work”.

Yes. When I began the project in 2014, I met, interviewed, and filmed 50 artists that I had met in the city. The told me they loved Baghdad and that they would stay here no matter what. Less than a year later, 30 of these artists had left. They were frustrated. The anti-government protests across Iraq had been ongoing for months. ISIS was sending car bombs into the city every other day. Nothing was changing.

with the artist Mohamad Moneka. The situation had become draining for him in Iraq. He would say “I don’t have the energy to work. Who is this work for? What can I achieve with it?” The political situation also scared him. Moneka had worked as a cameraman for the filmmaker Mohamad Daraji, and he’d gotten into trouble once for filming at check point. He was scared to produce his work, or to walk around town with a camera. Baghdad was becoming like a prison. Mohamed and his two brothers fled Iraq in the summer of 2015. He now lives in Vienna with his brother Mahmoud.
