The scholar Sati al-Husari served as founder of the Syrian Education Ministry in 1918-1920, and laid the groundwork for the curriculum of Syrian elementary and high school programs. He then went to Baghdad where he worked for King Faisal I, creating the Iraqi curriculum from scratch, returning briefly in 1943 to Syria to revamp Syrian high schools, at the request of President Shukri al-Quwatli. He is pictured here in 1965 with his granddaughters the writer Mayada and Abdiya, and his daughter Salwa.
