In northern Newfoundland and particularly at Port au Choix, we are looking at Palaeo-Eskimo people who lived at the periphery of their Arctic range and who were therefore highly sensitive to any kind of environmental change. What is really interesting is how different cultures reacted to climate change in their own way. For example, we are finding that while increased warming was bad for the Palaeo-Eskimos, it was beneficial for Amerindians.

An inventory was conducted in 1996 to verify the status of the various gull populations and determine the impact of the fauna on the vegetation of Île Nue de Mingan in the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve. The experimental approach involved a systematic count of active gull nests coupled with an estimate of the amount of damage to vegetation caused by gulls and muskrats. The total gull population on Île Nue de Mingan was estimated at 7,124 couples in 1996, and was composed of 4,487 Herring Gull couples, 144 Great Black-backed Gull couples, 2,488 couples that were either Herring or Great Black-backed Gulls, and five Ring-billed Gull couples. Île Nue gull populations, especially Herring Gulls, have been on the decline since 1990. The exception is Great Black-backed Gulls, which are increasing in numbers. Ring-billed Gulls have all but disappeared since 1983. The gulls mainly congregate at the Eastern end of Île Nue , which is protected from prevailing winds, as well as on the elevated central plateau. Common and Arctic Stern populations (107 couples) are stable, while the Common Eider population (341 couples) is rising. These three species are, however, confined to peripheral areas avoided by gulls. The negative impact of gulls on the vegetation of Île Nue is due to trampling, physical damage and deposition of feces in nesting and roosting areas. The most frequently encountered signs of damage are patches of yellowing vegetation interspersed with areas of bare ground, although large areas of vegetation are occasionally destroyed totally. The area of vegetation damaged by gulls is currently estimated at 2,4% (54,661 m 2 ) of the entire island, with approximately 0,8% (18,468 m 2 ) of the island vegetation totally destroyed. Some 9,256 active and inactive muskrat burrows and feeding holes as well as five lodges have been inventoried on île Nue . Despite this, muskrats are unlikely to overpopulate the island since the wet environments and food sources preferred by these rodents are fairly rare. Muskrat burrows and holes can be found everywhere on the island but damage to vegetation caused by burrowing activities is quite low at approximately 73 m 2 . Gulls use and have the most impact on the barrens, while muskrats use and have the most impact on fens and barrens. Certain fascinating and rare plants are threatened by their close proximity to gull and muskrat habitats. P

But the more probable short-term scenario is repetition of a recurring Lebanese cycle: a political stalemate that triggers popular tensions which, in turn, political actors manipulate in order to bolster their leverage. As a result, instability is most likely to occur in Lebanon’s under-developed peripheral areas, whose populations are deeply divided by current events, harbour painful memories of the civil war and are largely left to their own devices until escalating violence brings them into the political game. If the notion of geographic areas has a sense when one considers terrestrial ecosystems, things get complicated as soon as the interest is directed at the marine environment. In fact, the spatial distribution of species is very different, there, and there is actually no notion of endemism as per country or micro-region. Instead, what can be found in the oceans are zones which accommodate a large biodiversity such as South-East Asia and the Coral Triangle as well as the peripheral zones which are mainly less rich in species (even though the latter may sometimes accommodate specimen which are important due to their originality although they are less populated). In other words: if it is possible for terrestrial ecosystems to identify those zones which should be preserved with priority by crossing the criteria “numerous endemic species” + “considerable destruction of habitats”, this framework does not apply to the oceans. However, these cover more than 70% of the planet and accommodate 32 of the known 33 phylums 15 of which are exclusively marine! In the oceans more than in the geographical regions, it is mainly the condition of the various big types of habitats (coral reefs, mangroves...) which will help to measure the vulnerability of marine species.

Those are experiencing a demographic explosion as a result of the rural exodus, and living conditions there are very precarious. In these overpopulated outlying areas and in isolated rural areas there are many people starting and developing income generating activities who need access to microloans. But few microfinance institutions will offer them help because the isolation, precariousness and vulnerability of such microentrepreneurs create costs and risks that the institutions don’t want to take. The few MFIs that do exist demand guarantees that the most vulnerable cannot offer.

Il Kenzenkopf sorge proprio a nord dell’Hochplatte e presenta a tratti un crinale aguzzo con pareti scoscese da ambo i lati, poiché in questi punti il calcare del Wetterstein è assolutamente verticale. Sotto il Kenzenkopf e il Geiselstein si trova il rifugio Kenzenhütte. La sua costruzione non è dovuta al Club Alpino, in quanto già nel XVI secolo serviva da alloggio a boscaioli e cacciatori. Oggi il rifugio a gestione privata è aperto agli escursionisti. L’abbondanza di detriti nelle valli e le gole profonde sono la causa dell’impraticabilità di questo complesso montuoso, che difatti è scarsamente popolato. Anche gli alpeggi sono relativamente rari. L’Ammergebirge, in passato riserva di caccia del re, è oggi la maggiore area protetta tedesca. La parte tedesca, ad eccezione di strette zone marginali, è interamente sotto protezione. Le numerose strade forestali sono chiuse al traffico. In questa zona anche le ferrovie di montagna e gli impianti di risalita sono ben più rari che in altre località nel limite settentrionale delle Alpi. La flora del complesso montuoso dell’Ammergebirge riflette la varietà geologica. In spazi ristretti si trovano piante tipiche delle zone calcaree vicino a piante che le evitano; degne di nota sono le numerose specie di genziane, che fioriscono d’estate. Negli alpeggi nel corso dell’anno si susseguono nell’ordine croco, soldanella e ranuncolo. Anche l’aquilegia, i vitalbino dei sassi e la digitale sono frequenti, mentre è rara la stella alpina. Oltre a queste vi sono moltissime altre piante alpine, che in virtù delle severe disposizioni (è vietato qualsiasi intervento sulla flora) possono svilupparsi indisturbate. I 27.600ha di zona protetta Ammergau sono popolati da greggi di camosci, marmotte e moltissimi esemplari di cervi e caprioli. Degno di nota è anche il numero di galli cedroni, fagiani di monte e corrieri piccoli.

Tukaj se človeku ponuja vse: od položnih s travo poraslih kopastih vzpetin, do tako znamenitih in priljubljenih plezalnih destinacij, kot je Geiselstein.“ (Dieter Seibert) Vzpetina Kenzenkopf stoji točno severno od vzpetine Hochplatte in tvori s strmimi stenami na obeh straneh mestoma oster greben, saj wettersteinski apnenec na tem mestu stoji popolnoma navpično. Pod vzpetinama Kenzenkopf in Geiselstein leži koča Kenzen, ki je ni zgradilo planinsko društvo, temveč je že od 16. stol. naprej služila kot zatočišče gozdnim delavcem in lovcem. Danes je koča v zasebni lasti in je odprta za pohodnike. Zaradi obilja grušča v dolinah, pa tudi globoko vrezanih sotesk je to pogorje neprehodno in zato tudi redko poseljeno. Tudi planšarij je tukaj bolj malo. Gorovje Ammergebirge, nekoč kraljevi lovski revir, je danes največji nemški naravni rezervat. Celoten nemški del gorovja ima, z izjemo ozkih obrobij, priznan naravovarstveni status. Številne gozdne ceste so zaprte za javni promet. Tukaj je v primerjavi s severnimi obronki Alp tudi zelo malo gorskih žičnic in vlečnic. Glede na svoje geološke danosti je rastlinstvo v pogorju Ammergebirge je temu primerno pestro. Rastline, ki uspevajo na apnenčastih tleh, rastejo v bližini tistih, ki apnenca ne prenašajo, izstopajo številne vrste svišča, ki poleti cvetijo v gorah. V planinah se v teku leta za žafranom in alpskim zvončkom oz. soldanelo zvrsti še alpska zlatica. Pogoste so tudi orlica, alpska trta in preobjeda, zelo redko pa naletimo na planiko. Poleg že omenjenih tu uspeva še vrsta drugih planinskih rastlin, ki so se zaradi strogih naravovarstvenih predpisov (prepovedani so vsakršni posegi v rastlinstvo) lahko neovirano razvijale. V naravnem rezervatu, ki skupno obsega 27.600 hektarov Ammergauskih Alp, domujejo tropi gamsov, svizcev in ogromno jelenjadi. Omembe vredno je tudi število divjih petelinov, ruševcev in tekačev.

Die Mammographie bei einer Brustprothese muss eine spezielle Technik (EKLUND-Technik) zur Verlagerung der Prothese einsetzen, um eine hochwertige Mammographie zu erzielen. Es ist ebenfalls wünschenswert, grundsätzlich ein Ultraschall zu machen, damit sämtliche Quadranten der Brust einschliesslich der peripheren Bereiche untersucht werden, wo eine Mammographie nicht so effizient ist. Eine weitere Besonderheit der Brustbildgebung auf die Prothese besteht darin, dass sie eine stereotaktische und schallgeführte Biopsie schwieriger machen kann. Bei Schwierigkeiten gibt es zahlreiche Fachradiologen, die die stereotaktische Biopsie einer verdächtigen Verletzung unter guten Bedingungen karzinologischer Sicherheit und Sicherheit für die Prothese erzielen können.
