This land-locked subspecies is endemic to Québec and may number as few as 100 individuals. It inhabits a small series of lakes in northern Québec and is the only subspecies to live entirely in fresh water. The population has declined due to hunting and may still be declining.  Proposed hydro-electric development would cause pervasive changes to the habitat.

Die Korallengärten, Sandflächen und Wracks um Lankayan gehören zu den besten Makro-Tauchplätzen der Welt. Die Vielfalt an niederen Tieren und Kleinlebewesen ist enorm und auch seltene Kreaturen wie Angler-, Geisterpfeifen- oder Mandarinenfische können hier beobachtet werden. Sogar der Mimic- oder der Blaupunkt-Oktopus wurden hier schon fotografiert. An den Schiffswracks tummeln sich Fischschwärme und Rotfeuerfische. Zwischen März und Mai wurden vermehrt Walhaie gesichtet und gelegentlich huscht ein Schwarzspitzenriffhai vorbei. Ansonsten sind Begegnungen mit Grossfischen eher selten. Getaucht wird meist in Tiefen zwischen fünf und zwanzig Metern. Da es sich um ein ausgesprochenes Makrogebiet handelt, ist es nicht allzu gravierend, dass die Sichtweiten oft zwischen 8 und 12 Metern liegen.
