Bavaria produces a huge amount of treated process water every year from its brewery operations. The screw conveyor raises the water to a certain level, from where, thanks to the power produced by the height differential, it is transported into the immediate environment. One the one hand the water is returned subsurface to the farmers’ land via a pipe network; a process known as ‘reverse drainage’. On the other hand, it is conveyed to the canal, so that others can make use of the extra water. The ultimate objective is to keep the water in the immediate environment.

The project focuses on the rural cultural landscape and on agriculture, which plays a vital role in its formation. The project proceeds from the premise that landscape is a complex unit with three main stakeholders: 1) farmers/land owners; 2) other citizens, and 3) experts and decisionmakers, These groups of stakeholders are all quite different, but have in common a lack of communication amongst themselves and they have no knowledge of other two groups. Landscape is therefore a sphere with high conflict potential.

The biggest problems that Zimbabwe is facing are poor leadership and high rate of corruption. President Robert Mugabe, who has led the country for more than 25 years, is considered one of the worst leaders of state ever. The population is living in extreme poverty and hunger, and “big” Mugabe does not care for the betterment of Zimbabwe and its people. His government is blamed for the economic problems in the country, and he has been criticised for the policy of seizure of white farmers’ land and violence against people who disagree with the way he runs the country.

"It was clear that a cost-benefit analysis was an essential first step for the Holwerd aan Zee project to get off the ground," says Klaske Miedema-Jensma, an adviser at Rabobank Noordoost Friesland specialised in cooperatives, and herself a Holwerd resident. "The type of study they were looking to commission – which ended up being a joint effort between consultancy firms Witteveen + Bos and Rho Adviseurs voor Leefruimte – would take a full year and cost 50,000 euros. We carefully reviewed and discussed their loan application with our members council and decided to green-light it. We feel the Holwerd aan Zee project is a perfect example of community initiative, which we can only encourage. It’s a genuine grassroots effort, which came about through close collaboration between local residents, farmers, land owners, local authorities, and various businesses and institutions. People in the area are very excited about the plan – it gives them hope for a better future, and young people now feel there might be opportunities for them to remain in Holwerd after all and buy a home there. Our bank is happy to use our cooperative dividend to help make this happen."

Mensen in de regio zijn er heel positief over. De plannen geven ze weer hoop op een betere toekomst, de jeugd ziet weer kansen om wellicht toch te blijven en hier een woning te kopen. We zijn als Rabobank Noordoost Friesland blij om vanuit ons coöperatief dividend hieraan een belangrijk steentje bij te kunnen dragen.'
