Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has sold the two Latvian private broadcasters LNT and TV5 to Latvian businessman Andrejs Ēķis. The daily Latvijas Avīze warns that their quality could now deteriorate: "Ēķis, the lord of the airwaves, is proudly philosophising about how one politician is good while the other is bad, how he likes one party but doesn't like another. And he acts as if there was no democracy worth supporting. Show consideration in the election campaign? What for? And why? After all we have new programmes and independent experts to explain everything to us. But the view of the EU is that the state is obliged to organise the media sector in such a way that a society's needs for democracy, culture and information are satisfied. And every state has the right to pass the corresponding laws to ensure this. It is incomprehensible that Latvia is so stubbornly opposing this process and insisting on going its own way."

Le magnat des médias Rupert Murdoch a vendu les deux chaînes privées lettones LNT et TV5 à l'homme d'affaires local Andrejs Ēķis. Le quotidien Latvijas Avīze met en garde contre une perte de qualité : "Ēķis, désormais maître des ondes, philosophe avec fierté comme bon lui semble, explique pourquoi tel politique est bon et tel autre idiot, pourquoi tel parti lui plaît et tel autre non. Il fait comme s'il n'y avait pas de démocratie qui mérite d'être soutenue. Tenir compte de la campagne électorale ? Pourquoi donc ? Ne disposons-nous pas de programmes d'information et d'experts indépendants qui peuvent tout expliquer ? L'avis de l'UE, c'est que l'Etat est contraint d'aménager le secteur des médias de telle sorte que les besoins démocratiques, culturels et informationnels de la société soient satisfaits. Et chaque Etat a le droit de promulguer les lois correspondantes pour y parvenir. Il est incompréhensible que la Lettonie soit aussi réfractaire à ce processus et qu'elle s'obstine autant à suivre sa propre voie."

Die Tageszeitung Latvijas Avīze warnt vor einem Niveauverlust: "Ēķis als Herrscher des Äthers philosophiert stolz vor sich hin, wonach der eine Politiker gut und der andere dumm sei, die eine Partei gefällt ihm, die andere nicht. Und er tut so, als gebe es keine Demokratie, die es zu unterstützen lohne. Rücksicht im Wahlkampf? Was soll das denn sein? Und wozu überhaupt, wir haben doch Nachrichtenprogramme und unabhängige Experten, die einem alles erklären? Die Ansicht der EU ist jedoch, dass der Staat verpflichtet ist, den Medienbereich so zu organisieren, dass die Bedürfnisse der Gesellschaft nach Demokratie, Kultur und Information befriedigt werden. Und jeder Staat hat das Recht, entsprechende Gesetze zu erlassen. Es ist unverständlich, warum Lettland diesem Prozess so trotzig widersteht und auf seinen eigenen Weg beharrt."

Medialny potentat Rupert Murdoch sprzedał oba łotewskie prywatne kanały LNT i TV5 rodzimemu przedsiębiorcy Andrejsowi Ēķisowi. Dziennik Latvijas Avīze ostrzega przed obniżeniem poziomu: "Ēķis jako władca eteru z dumą roztacza poglądy, że jeden polityk jest dobry, inny z kolei głupi, że ta partia mu się podoba, a inna nie. Sprawia wrażenie, jakby nie było demokracji, którą warto wspierać. Jakieś względy w kampanii wyborczej? Co to w ogóle ma być? Po co, skory mamy przecież programy informacyjne i niezależnych ekspertów, którzy wszystko wytłumaczą. Jednak zdaniem UE państwo jest zobowiązane zorganizować sektor mediowy w ten sposób, by zaspokajał społeczne potrzeby demokracji, kultury i informacji. I każde państwo ma prawo do wydania odpowiednich ustaw. Niezrozumiałe jest to, dlaczego Łotwa z taką przekorą przeciwstawia się temu procesowi i obstaje przy własnym pomyśle."
