A drama of gazes in which a woman´s turned-up eyes express both her sexual superiority and her submission: She shows the contempt she feels for her impotent husband, who is unable to start the car, by twisting her eyes from the passenger seat. And with regard to their pursuers, who later attempt to force their way through both doors of the car where the couple has found refuge, keeping them in view by twisting her eyes is not possible at the moment she looks, the victor gains entry to the vehicle, which he had been confident of from the film´s very beginning. His composed expression, full of both speculation and disdain as he languidly chews on a toothpick (which justifies the ironic tone of the subplot dealing with the preparation of meat), meets the woman´s cool, passive gaze thanks to the indirectness of the cut alone. At the beginning of the film the woman sits in a rattan chair, the furniture of sexual liberation since Emmanuelle. The two men sit outside, attempting to penetrate the rooms occupied by the woman. Although Twisted Eyes has more of a narrative character than many other films by Dietmar Brehm, it is primarily structural. The close-up of the victorious man (the patient hunter) functions as a leitmotif which comments on a primitive type of sexual politics canonized in pornographic films: Women are at the mercy of two types of desire one powerless and the other overpowering. Brehm ends his film with an image taken from nature, similarly to its beginning with one from the food chain.

Their sound and visual project, Layered Histories, was an elaborate interactive work that projected the many layers of an illuminated Hebrew manuscript (the Marseilles Bible) as a beautiful, fragile art book, reflecting the convergence of cultures (Christianity, Islam, Jewish) in medieval Spain; it served as a narrative text of layered meanings with a subtle soundtrack or sound sculpture of found sound, noise, and music fragments from Jewish culture.

Réception, esthétique, histoire offre à la fois un large panorama et un bilan des différentes approches dont le cinéma helvétique fait actuellement l'objet dans le champ des études académiques. Menées tant sur les plans esthétique et narratif que du point de vue du contexte de production et de réception, les analyses proposées traitent de films d'hier et d'aujourd'hui issus de différents horizons. Des fictions d'Alain Tanner, de Thomas Imbach ou de Lionel Baier aux documentaires Katzenball ou Nicolas Bouvier, 22 Hospital Street, en passant par le film de commande, le cinéma expérimental (Fischli et Weiss), la vidéodanse et le film didactique ou politique, c'est en effet dans sa diversité que le cinéma suisse est abordé, parfois loin des sentiers battus des pratiques légitimées. Afin de mieux saisir l'identité plurielle de ce cinéma national, on questionne non seulement le discours que les films suisses entendent porter sur le monde, mais aussi les différents discours qui ont été portés sur eux. Pour ce faire, les auteurs font reposer leur étude sur des sources parfois inédites (entretiens, sondages, dépouillement de la presse ou de fonds d'archives) et recourent à l'enquête sociologique des publics ou à la recherche historiographique pour esquisser les contours de ce paysage du «cinéma suisse», toujours à redéfinir et à explorer plus avant

Pictures cannot represent time. They are stable and immutable while time can be perceived only in connection with change and motion. Already in antiquity, however, we encounter the phenomenon of narrative pictures, which generate a course of action and therefore a course of time. The specific narrative mechanisms of ancient vase paintings and wall paintings, i.e. the techniques employed by painters to create the illusion of chronological progress, have been carefully analysed by modern scholars. Yet very little research has been done so far into the question of whether antiquity developed a theoretical approach to the issue of signs of time within pictures.

Since 2003 his main focus has been on video animations and animation art. After producing a couple of narrative cartoon movies his current animations mainly deal with artistic synaesthesia. So far his films have been shown at several film festivals around the world and have been awarded a number of times. Some of his films include: THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE (2004), WALZERKÖNIG (2008) TINAMV1 (2011, which received the Hubert Sielecki Award). Ovu neobičnu veduta grada Hvara izradio je F. Biermann oko 1875. godine. Objavljena je u Trstu od strane austrijskog osiguravajućeg društva Lloyd. Ova je veduta po svemu sudeći dio grafičke mape F. Biermanna, jer slični Biermannovi prikazi u izdanju austrijskog Lloyda postoje za još neke dalmatinske gradove. Veduta pruža pogled na grad Hvar s otočića Gališnika smještenom na ulazu u hvarsku luku. No, ne radi se o realnom izgledu grada, već o impresiji slikara kojeg su se očito osobito dojmile utvrde iznad grada. Konfiguracija terena na kojem se smjestio sam grad, ovdje je predočena kao izrazito strma i brdovita. I urbana struktura grada Hvara teško je prepoznatljiva. Među označenim objektima sa sigurnošću raspoznajemo samo gradsku ložu i toranj sa satom čiji prikaz dominira središnjim dijelom luke. Slikom dominiraju prikazi fortifikacija: tvrđava Španjol te tvrđave na brdu nad Dolcem sagrađena u vrijeme francuske uprave u Dalmaciji, 1806. godine. Prikaz konfiguracije terena na kojima su smještene utvrde također je sasvim nerealan. S obzirom na brojne disproporcije, veduta je očito nastala na temelju deskriptivnih ili narativnih izvora, pa možemo pretpostaviti da F. Biermann vjerojatno nikada nije osobno vidio grad Hvar.

A drama of gazes in which a woman´s turned-up eyes express both her sexual superiority and her submission: She shows the contempt she feels for her impotent husband, who is unable to start the car, by twisting her eyes from the passenger seat. And with regard to their pursuers, who later attempt to force their way through both doors of the car where the couple has found refuge, keeping them in view by twisting her eyes is not possible at the moment she looks, the victor gains entry to the vehicle, which he had been confident of from the film´s very beginning. His composed expression, full of both speculation and disdain as he languidly chews on a toothpick (which justifies the ironic tone of the subplot dealing with the preparation of meat), meets the woman´s cool, passive gaze thanks to the indirectness of the cut alone. At the beginning of the film the woman sits in a rattan chair, the furniture of sexual liberation since Emmanuelle. The two men sit outside, attempting to penetrate the rooms occupied by the woman. Although Twisted Eyes has more of a narrative character than many other films by Dietmar Brehm, it is primarily structural. The close-up of the victorious man (the patient hunter) functions as a leitmotif which comments on a primitive type of sexual politics canonized in pornographic films: Women are at the mercy of two types of desire one powerless and the other overpowering. Brehm ends his film with an image taken from nature, similarly to its beginning with one from the food chain.

“Matthias Meyer’s works build on the visual power of cinematographic images, which appear familiar even when narrative is eliminated, when parts stand for the whole and certainty loses itself in memory. It is an aesthetic of disappearance that generates new image worlds from the fragmentary, in which absence gains its own significance, since it achieves new visibility as an empty space. Frozen film stills encounter silent sequences whose erstwhile eloquence still vibrates in the space like a distant echo. However, it is not only the deconstruction of filmic dramaturgies or the abbreviation of iconic images that motivates these works.

Hand signals engraved in stone, Bibles clamped between false teeth, blurred chalk marks on blackboards, school benches turned into birdhouses. Kemang Wa Lehulere’s (*1984, SA) many-sided work produces haunting, suggestive images, founded in the past of his native country South Africa. Located between an autobiographical search for clues and historical events, the exhibition creates a place of reflection on ideologies in the education system, the instrumentalisation of religion or the erasure of collective memory. He submits his visual narratives to an on-going process of overwriting and reconstruction. Beyond the examination of South African history his drawings, performances, installations and videos also have an impact that extends to the questions of our time. The force of an associative visual language provokes an awareness of a present that its history has caught up with and which demands the disclosure of differences and prejudices. Like a film script waiting to be implemented, a narrative space opens up in which muted voices have their say again and unfulfilled ways of living become reality.

Des signes de mains gravés dans la pierre, des exemplaires de la Bible coincés entre des dentiers, des traits de craie floutés sur tableau noir, des bancs d’école transformés en volières. Le travail protéiforme de Kemang Wa Lehulere (*1984, SA) libère des images poignantes et suggestives qui trouvent leur origine dans le passé de son pays d’origine, l’Afrique du Sud. Entre recherche autobiographique et faits historiques, l’artiste crée dans son exposition un espace qui invite à réfléchir à l’irruption des idéologies dans le système éducatif, aux instrumentalisations de la religion ou encore à l’effacement de la mémoire collective. Il fait subir à son travail un processus continu de réinterprétation et de reconstruction. Au-delà de la confrontation avec l’histoire sud-africaine, ses dessins, performances, installations et vidéos ont aussi une résonance dans les questionnements de notre époque. Le flot de son langage visuel associatif éveille la conscience d’un présent rattrapé par son histoire, qui revendique la mise à nu de ses différences et préjugés. A l’image d’un scénario attendant sa réalisation, émerge un espace narratif dans lequel des voix opprimées retrouvent la parole et des projets inaboutis deviennent réalité.
